The ultimate in exclusive private island decadence, on a dreamy Maldivian atoll.
Jiri Smei developed Velaa after finding that holidays in the Maldives never quite met his expectations. So little details are everything at this $220 million resort. The sea turtles who made Velaa island their home long before people arrived (and who you’ll share it with during your stay) have heavily influenced the design. You’ll find subtle seashell flourishes woven into the architecture by designer Petr Kolár; and seen from the sky the resort resembles the shape of a turtle’s head.
Chic and contemporary, the resort’s villas use high vaulted ceilings to make the most of natural light, and all enjoy beautiful views over the lagoon. You’ll enjoy the latest mod cons too – down to paving stones shipped in specially from Jordan which don’t absorb heat, so you can walk barefoot even under the hot midday sun.
For the ultimate indulgence, stay at the appropriately named ‘Romantic Pool Residence’ with your own chef and butler, and even your own gym and spa, so you don’t have to leave your rooms at all during your stay.
There’s plenty to tempt you out, though. You’ll find the Maldives largest wine collection, for one. Or for something more active, try the climbing wall, or work on your swing at the Velaa Golf Academy, designed by José Maria Olazabal.
