Personal safari experiences in this private slice of the Kalahari.
Tswalu Kalahari is a wilderness experience waiting to be discovered. Cradled by mountain ranges and set in the vast ‘green’ desert, the thatched-roofed suites of Motse Lodge have been built from red clay, local stone and desert sand to harmoniously evoke the surrounding landscape.
And what a surrounding landscape it is: open savannahs full of Africa’s weird and wonderful species such as aardvark, bat-eared foxes, armoured pangolin and long-eared caracal. This lodge makes a great combination to a big 5 safari in the Kruger or malaria-free Madikwe, both of which connect easily.
Track the reserve’s rhinos with a private guide and tracker, an exciting and rewarding experience or horse ride across the dunes as the colours shift with the position of the sun.
Motse is great for children too – they will delight in meeting meerkats with the local ranger and making their own bows and arrows for a spot of archery. For large families, we suggest staying at Tarkuni, Tswalu’s private home which comes equipped with its own swimming pool, plenty of places to lounge and boma for fun family dinners.
Romantics can make the most out of the desert skies sleeping out at the Malori (meaning ‘dreamer’ in Tswane). Cosy up in this raised deck suite and settle down beneath the stars for the night – there’s no need to move when your guide can prepare sundowners, canapés and a private candle lit dinner.
