Samara, Eastern Cape

South Africa

Deep in the Karoo, Samara not only oozes charm and character but has extraordinary views and wildlife too.

Samara is the largest private game reserve in the Eastern Cape. Some 28,000 hectares of pristine, malaria-free wilderness; a place where luxuriously restored 19th-century accommodation and passionate conservation entwine with breath-taking scenery.

From the dramatic mountains of the Karoo to the magnificent plains of Camdeboo, the complex and diverse eco-systems of the reserve are home to Cape Mountain zebra, elephant, lion, giraffe, rhino, buffalo, antelope and some lesser spotted creatures such as aardvark.

Expertly-guided game drives and safari walks are offered daily as well as the chance to enjoy picnics, mountain biking and the opportunity to track cheetah on foot, a really special experience.

Bring family run, there is a special children’s programme that’s dedicated to making conservationists out of even the youngest wildlife enthusiast. Kids will love being on the lookout to see their first giraffe on the wide-open plains, and with Samaras new Big 5 status that’s of course not all they might see.

Whether you choose a room in Karoo Lodge or go for the rather upmarket Manor House, you’ll love the laid-back luxury accommodation, a chance to relax by the pool in between activities, and you certainly won’t go hungry with heartening food served as standard.
