Splendid isolation on paradise islands in an idyllic eco-friendly resort.
On the last day of their sailing trip in 2005, Rory and Melita Hunter fell in love with a pair of small islands off the Cambodian coast and bought them there and then. The islands are a world away from the bustle of Phnom Penh, and the Hunters set about creating an idyllic island retreat.
You’ll have spectacular ocean and island views no matter which of the 24 spacious private villas you choose at Song Saa. You can book villas individually or hire the entire island for a real sense of splendid isolation. Each comes with its own 2.6 metre pool, but we love diving straight into the ocean from an Overwater Villa. Sustainability is a watchword at Song Saa: everything is made of recycled and reclaimed timber, and villas are decorated with repurposed items – like beautifully preserved chunks of tree trunk as bedside tables.
The spa at Song Saa is based on the Buddhist tradition of metta bhavana, or ‘loving kindness’. You’ll be pampered in little sanctuaries dotted around the island, nestled in nature. Or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, you can venture out among the mangrove clusters on a sunrise paddle boarding trip, or hike across the deserted Koh Rong island, ending with a picnic lunch on the beach.
