Icelandic hospitality amid abundant natural wonders.
Surrounded by tranquil countryside, Skalakot Lodge is the perfect base from which to explore southern Iceland’s stunning natural wonders. A warm welcome is assured at this family-run farm hotel.
Owners Johanna and Mummi are the seventh generation to run the farm, which they built the hotel as an extension of. In each of its 14 rooms you’ll find Art Deco design and creature comforts, but it’s the activities and scenery that are the real draw.
Riding is a particular speciality. Get to know the farm’s pure breed Icelandic horses on a choice of guided day rides. From short tours of the farm to longer rides out to the beautiful Seljalandsfoss waterfall, there are options for all levels of experience.
If you’d rather explore on foot, there are plenty of excellent hiking trails in the area offering fresh mountain air and magnificent views. Or head to the nearby Eyjafjallajökull glacier and volcano for an exhilarating snowmobile adventure, where you can take in the views from the top of the caldera.
Back at the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, seasonal specialities like Arctic char and fresh salmon are served alongside fresh vegetables from the farm’s own garden and days are rounded off with a soak in the outdoor hot tub, while a canopy of stars twinkle above.
