Cruising through magical Kipling scenery

Jungle-encroached pagodas, ancient towns and water dappled in sunlight: it’s easy to see why Rudyard Kipling was inspired by such romantic settings. Drifting down the Irrawaddy River in Sanctuary Ananda, is like unravelling storyteller scenery.

Custom-built by local craftsmen, her exterior resembles a 19th century riverboat. Inside you’ll find a more contemporary picture – twenty suites adorned with polished teak wood, rich silk and vintage photography. If you feel like splurging, then we recommend the decadent Owner’s Suite with its own veranda.

In the morning, you can watch the sun illuminate Bagan’s ancient temples while gliding through the air in a hot air balloon – a champagne breakfast will be waiting for you as you land. Back on board, the culinary journey continues from freshly baked pastries and decadent afternoon teas to soft-shell crab dishes and aromatic red curries.

When you’re not out exploring, you can still enjoy undisturbed panoramic views from your private balcony. This is our favourite place to read a book and contemplate Kipling’s poetry.
