Panoramic ocean views and a taste of the real Sardinia.
There’s a single winding road leading up through the forests above Costa Smeralda. Follow it, and you’ll come to a set of traditional stone shepherd dwellings nestled in the hills. This is Petra Segreta, a five-star boutique country resort. Each of its 23 suites are classically Sardinian, with rustic wooden furniture and warm light. You’ll have a clear view of the sea and the La Maddalena archipelago whichever room you choose, but our pick are the private pool suites where you can relax in the always-warm water and enjoy the scenery.
You’ll find the spa in granite grottos that echo the stone hills of the island. Pick from Asian-inspired treatments like the Padma foot massage, or Raja to release tension from the back. And in the hotel’s two restaurants, there’s light local Sardinian cuisine on offer. Fuoco Sacro is the more glamorous of the two; visit in the summer when tables are laid out on the veranda for an even better panorama of the islands dotting the Mediterranean below.
The nearby village of San Pantaleo is well worth a visit, too. You can people watch in the main square over a glass of Prosecco, or walk the little back alleys and side streets to discover art galleries and local craft makers.
