Floral kingdoms, ocean safari and panoramic villas.
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is stunning year-round but in the golden evening sun of springtime it’s even more alluring. The surrounding fields come alive as the sun sets and if you’re patient, you’ll see the native Erica irregularis spread like blush pink feathery brushstrokes.
It’s set among rolling milkwood forest and fynbos. All the suites feel cosy and serene but we have a soft spot for the private villas, tucked away among the flower-speckled bush with panoramic views sweeping all the way to the sea.
Excursions at Grootbos are a massive highlight. You can go honey harvesting, mussel foraging, horse riding or hiking. A marine safari here is something very special. From June to December you can see Cape Fur Seals, Great White Sharks, Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins, African Penguins and Southern Right Whales.
You don’t need to stray too far to see marine life, though. If you’re lucky, you may be able to spot a pod of dolphins from the deck – while you sip on rooibos-infused gin and tuck into barbecued fresh fish.
