Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Danum Valley

Once-in-a-lifetime encounters with exotic creatures in the untouched Borneo rainforest.

A stay at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge is a step back in time to a pristine planet. The forests around the lodge are over a million years old and essentially untouched – and the Borneo Rainforest Lodge is the only resort in the 43,000 hectare Danum Valley. The Lodge are fiercely protective of the environment, so visitor numbers are kept low, with no more than 60 guests on any one day. And the Lodge has been designed to have a minimal impact on the local area. The staff see themselves as guardians of this precious habitat, and rightly so.

You’ll stay in spacious wooden chalets and villas, which are elevated from the forest floor. These are elegant structures, with floor-to-ceiling windows to offer unimpeded views of the forest. Many have private infinity pools out on their decks, too, and it’s something very special to experience the sights and sounds of the jungle up close while you take a dip.

But, of course, you don’t come to Borneo to lounge in the pool all day. You can trek out into the forest to track Sumatran Rhinos and wild Orangutans, along with hundreds of other species of mammal, reptile and bird. Try tubing down the Danum River, or taking a night safari, to get a different experience of the vibrant forest. A walk through the jungle canopy is a must as well, on walkways suspended between enormous trees known as ‘forest giants’,  90 feet up from the floor.

The lodge is around a 2-3 hour drive from the small town of Lahad Datu.
