Belmond Hotel Cipriani, Venice

A relaxed garden retreat, just five minutes from the bustle of St Mark’s square.

Ironically for a town that has water at its heart, swimming pools are hard to find in Venice. Not so at the Belmond Hotel Cipriani – it has the only pool in the centre of town, and it’s an Olympic sized one.

The Cipriani opened in 1958, and vintage glamour is still the order of the day. There are 79 rooms and suites, a spa and tennis courts, all in a peaceful garden setting. The hotel is family friendly too: there’s a babysitting service, a children’s menu and a children’s pool.

And when you’re ready for the hustle and bustle of central Venice, you can take the free five-minute boat ride across the lagoon to St Mark’s Square. It runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

After a busy day’s exploration, you can head back to the hotel’s own Oro restaurant, which was recently given a makeover by designer Adam Tihany. We’re also big fans of the less formal dining option at the Cip’s Club restaurant, alongside the picturesque Giudecca canal.

Once you’re done with dinner, you can head out onto the terrace and watch the last gondolas sail past as the sun sets over the city.

The Belmond Hotel Cipriani is set on the island of Giudecca, a short boat ride across the lagoon from the centre of Venice, and half an hour from Marco Polo airport.
