Our view
"A gorgeous three-bedroom, eco-designed villa built into the hillside overlooking the Indian Ocean, Walatta House is one of Sri Lanka’s most unique private homes and is a stunning example of the Tropical Modernism architectural style. Characterised by polished concrete, handmade red bricks and glass walls, what makes Walatta House stand out is its easy fusion with nature: the structure is partially submerged into the hillside, topped by green roofs and plenty of untamed greenery surrounds the property. Alongside a friendly team of staff and a Sri Lankan chef, a 20-metre swimming pool and direct access to the beach, Walatta House is a special place to stay. "

The Villa Experience
Just three bedrooms mean Walatta can house a small group with space and style, allowing guests to feel at one in the natural environment, with the warm Indian Ocean just steps away on a sandy bay edged by swaying coconut trees. Each bedroom is also clad in glass allowing further immersion into the tropical landscapes from dawn to dusk. With your own complement of staff, decide how you want to spend your day, whether that’s with a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast and a walk on the beach or perhaps tropical fruit before a morning lazing by the pool. In the locale, there’s plenty of authentic ways to get to know Sri Lanka – head inland to climb the Mulkirigala Rock Monastery or discover deserted beaches where turtles swim in the clear Indian Ocean. Buzzing surf town Hiriketiya is the ideal spot to pick up surfing and it’s easy to while away an afternoon browsing the artisan shops or having a sunset cocktail on the beach. Come home for a feast of chef-prepared ‘rice and curry’ – Sri Lanka’s staple meal with never-ending combinations of delicious, spiced dishes.
