Your Villa Experience
Chuchungi House is a private three-bedroom Swahili home on Lamu Island, offering a relaxed alternative to a traditional hotel and an ideal place to slow down after a safari. Set between the Indian Ocean and Lamu Creek, the house enjoys views in both directions, with a long swimming pool, spacious living areas and a dedicated team including a chef, house staff and boat captain. Guests also have the use of a large private speedboat, making it easy to explore the surrounding coastline and islands.
Arranged across four floors, the house has been designed with the character of Lamu Old Town and Shela in mind, with white stucco details, airy interiors and plenty of shaded spaces. The master bedroom has a king-size bed and en-suite bathroom, while the queen and twin bedrooms share a bathroom according to the detailed accommodation information provided. Dining and relaxation spaces are spread throughout the house, with upper terraces providing places to read, enjoy the views or simply escape the heat.
Chuchungi House is particularly suited to guests who appreciate a slower pace. Days can be spent by the pool or beach, exploring Shela and Lamu Old Town, sailing by dhow at sunset or taking the boat to nearby islands, mangroves and sandbanks. Children are welcome, although the house is best suited to older children due to its stairs, open terraces and residential layout, and supervision is important. Nanny services can be arranged in advance.
Location Overview
Chuchungi House is tucked just behind the beach and dunes on Lamu Island, within easy reach of Shela and Lamu Old Town. Days here are wonderfully unstructured – wander through sandy lanes and quiet squares, discover Lamu’s Swahili architecture and culture, take long walks along Shela Beach or head out on a traditional dhow as the sun sets. Rooftop terraces and shaded corners at the house also lend themselves to yoga, reading and slow mornings.
With a boat at your disposal, there is plenty to explore further afield, from neighbouring villages and islands to mangroves and sandbanks around the archipelago. Lamu Town can also be explored with a local guide for a deeper introduction to its trading history, architecture and living Swahili traditions.
