October

A fine time to explore ancient civilisations, scale desert dunes or play Robinson Crusoe.

As the days get shorter, the destinations become longer-haul. October’s a fine time to explore ancient civilisations, scale desert dunes or play Robinson Crusoe on a desert island. Families can also still find some sun closer to home during half-term.

The monsoon is over in northern India, making this a great time to explore the forts and palaces of Rajasthan and the iconic Taj Mahal. Myanmar has also dried off, with comfortable temperatures for visiting its pagodas and hill tribes. Malawi still boasts warm and dry days for that all-rounder safari, or try camping under a blanket of stars in the desert of Oman. Families can squeeze the last of the Mediterranean sun out of Cyprus, and it’s a fine time for hiking in Madeira. Feeling tropical? Get horizontal in the Seychelles, where you’ll see visiting whale sharks and nesting hawksbill turtles.
