Land of the Thunder Dragon
Touch down in Paro and you’ll be met by your private guide for a short transfer through the pine-laden Paro Valley to Thimphu, your base for the next two nights. Get your first insights into Bhutanese culture with visits to the Folk Heritage museum and National Library, hear the worshipper’s chants at the whitewashed Memorial Chorten, then try traditional butter tea at a local café. Keep your eyes peeled for Bhutan’s national animal, the Takin goat, on a hike through the valley to the monastic village of Doderak.
The stunning road journey to the Punakha valley takes you over the Dochula pass, where on a clear day you’ll see snow-capped Himalayan peaks in the distance. Take refuge for two nights amid the picturesque paddy fields and lush, untouched forest. Lose yourself in the landscape as you hike through the rice terraces to discover remote temples. Admire rich wall paintings at the impressive Punakha Dzong fortress, arguably Bhutan’s most beautiful monastery. When you’ve finished exploring, head to the hotel spa for some quiet contemplation. Then take your seat on the terrace to lap up the sweeping sunset views.
Your journey ends where it began, as you return to Paro for a final three-night stay. End on a high with a trek to the iconic Tiger’s Nest monastery. Perched precariously on a clifftop overlooking the Paro valley, your journey to the summit will take you through shaded pine forest and past billowing prayer flags. If the hike doesn’t take your breath away, then the views certainly will. Follow this with a hot stone bath to soothe any aching muscles, while you reflect on your time in the mountains.
