Treat yourself to the perfect Caribbean holiday pairing. Enjoy a dose of island escapism on undiscovered Bequia, before heading to the white sands and divine dining of Barbados. With regular air shuttle flights between the two islands, it’s easier to combine both destinations than you might think.
A short onward flight from Barbados brings you to Bequia (pronounced Beck-way), the second largest island in the Grenadines. This is the Caribbean how you imagine it to be, totally unspoiled and oozing old-world charm. Bequia Beach Hotel is the place to stay. Located on Friendship Beach and surrounded by lush tropical gardens, it’s one of our absolute favourites and the perfect base from which to explore. Hop in one of the island’s famous open backed taxis to Port Elizabeth for a stroll around its colourful shops and yacht-lined harbourfront. You’ll find striking coastline, fantastic local restaurants and courteous locals wherever you go. The rest of the time, simply recline your sun lounger as far as it will go and drift away to the sound of the gently lapping waters.
Rum & Restaurants
After a few days of sun-soaked serenity, it’s time to fly back to Barbados and experience a different side of the Caribbean. You’ll find a strong sense of Englishness, and even stronger rum. Rest your head on palm-fringed beaches or take to the waters for paddle boarding, surfing, scuba diving and deep-sea fishing adventures. From high-end waterfront dining to the more down to earth surroundings of the Friday night Oistins fish fry, you’ll feast on some best food in the Caribbean. Check in to Cobblers Cove, where you’ll find English traditions with a Caribbean twist. Enjoy daily afternoon tea by the sea, before curling up with a book to await another blistering Bajan sunset.
