Velaa, Maldives, Indian Ocean

The review:

Velaa Private Island

Located on the improbably beautiful Noonu Atoll, Veela Private Island puts the guest at the heart of everything they do. You won't be disappointed.

As you descend towards private island Velaa on the resort’s seaplane, you’ll have the first of many jaw-dropping moments as the turquoise-rimmed island shimmers into view. On arrival, meet your butler who will facilitate your every wish and introduce you to a life where nothing is too much trouble. Attention to detail is everything and super smart interiors show off a contemporary style with high vaulted ceilings adding to the feeling of cool calm.

“Velaa was created by a multi-millionaire whose expectations were never quite met in the Maldives. So, he created his own $220 million resort and the result is a magnificent Maldives, supercharged.”

Things to do

The cocooning spa is must-do. Thatched cabins hover over aquamarine waters and within are a sauna, steam and a snow room (the first of its kind in the Maldives), and a womb-like snooze pod. Have your DNA profiled, where skilled professionals unlock your genetics, analyse your lifestyle and create goals that are uniquely right for you. Elsewhere on the island an eight-hole golf course with an immaculate green awaits for those wanting to tee off, a climbing wall and shaded tennis court are ideal for active types.

Choose between beach villas or overwater bungalows, sunrise or sunset, residence or house and at each you’ll find private pools and a lavish outdoor area that has private bathrooms and decked terraces, where daybeds and overwater hammocks are strategically placed to make the most of the azure water. Inside, sleek touches include a circular free-standing tub and a fridge filled with chilled wine and champagne.

Food and drink

Given Velaa’s remote location, you’ll be astonished by the array of food on offer. Recommended is the Teppanyaki restaurant Tavaru, where chefs cook fresh seafood and steaks in front of you. This has sensational views, located on the top of the three-storey wine cellar. While you’re here, tour the huge selection of wines or have tasting with the in-house sommelier. At sunset you might like to pass by the champagne bar for a glass of bubbly to toast another day in paradise.

What stands out

This resort was very much built with the guest viewpoint in mind and it really shows. Little details including mobile phones for guests, champagne and cold towels on arrival and daily changing breakfast menus elevate your experience. However, it is the staff that really make Velaa stand out. Many have been here from the its opening and are not only charming and kind but always find a way to fulfil your request, am be genuinely happy to do so.

Best for

Those who are looking for the best of the best. In a destination known for its rustic-luxe décor, Velaa is a cut above with eye-catching architecture, sleek design and seriously good service.

The Verdict

If you want to push the boat out for a special celebration or just as a lovely treat to yourself and a loved one, Velaa will not disappoint. It’s expensive but oh-so worth it.
