Turtle Inn

Placencia, Belize

Discover Stephanie’s take on Turtle Inn, a luxury beachfront retreat in Placencia - where barefoot elegance, private cottages, and Caribbean charm come together in this Coppola-owned hideaway.

Rustic Coastal Luxury

Founded in 2001 by the acclaimed filmmaker Frances Ford Coppola, Turtle Inn is a barefoot beachfront retreat that blends relaxation with adventure. Rooted in local tradition and near to the fishing village of Placencia, the inn is perfect for families, couples, and thrill-seekers wanting a laid-back experience infused with a distinctly Belizean spirit.

“I loved the resorts rustic style with free-standing thatched cottages interspersed by swaying palm trees, hummingbirds flittering amongst the tropical gardens, sandy-toes dining, and the castaway island vibe. Although this isn’t a traditional beach resort – you are surrounded by nature both above and below the water."

WHEN TO GO:

December - July

NEED TO KNOW:

There are no direct flights from the UK to Belize.  Either fly direct to Cancun, Mexico, or to several cities in the USA (Miami, Houston, Atlanta) and connect on.  Either option will require an overnight stay on the outbound journey.

BEST FOR:

Travellers who are interested in combining a relaxed coastal stay with some snorkelling, scuba diving or fly-fishing activities on Belize’s Barrier Reef.

WHY WE LIKE IT:

A beachy hideaway with a castaway island vibe offering access to the world’s second largest barrier reef.

Tropical Pursuits

Turtle Inn’s rugged, natural surroundings set the tone for your stay, offering activities on land or at sea designed to energise and unwind. Days can begin with sunrise yoga on the beach or birdwatching with the hotel’s ornithologist, spotting some of Belize’s rarest species. Then challenge yourself with jungle ziplining, waterfall rappelling or paddleboarding across calm, turquoise waters to the Mangrove Islands. The standout experience at Turtle Inn is the on-site PADI dive centre, where knowledgeable instructors lead you to the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere, home to whale sharks and a dazzling variety of marine life. You can also sail to nearby cayes or watch the sun go down on a sunset cruise. Back on land, relax by the oval-shaped infinity pool, cycle into the charming Placencia village or drift into sweet oblivion with a Thai massage at the open-air Balinese spa.

SLEEP BY THE SEA

Thatched cottages and villas sit lightly on the land, some just steps from the sea, others tucked in quiet garden corners. Designed with Balinese ease, each is spacious and in tune with its surroundings, boasting hand-carved furniture, white linen dotted with pink flowers and indoor-outdoor bathrooms with sky-lit showers. Screened porches open to the breeze, and most cottages are naturally cooled or air-conditioned. Thoughtful touches include morning coffee delivered to your door, a jar of home-baked cookies, and an in-room Illy machine. Larger private villas with a pool, kitchen and butler service offer added privacy for couples, families or groups.

DRINK & DINE

Turtle Inn offers a range of tempting dining experiences, each thoughtfully designed to reflect its coastal setting. At Mare, the signature all-day restaurant, you can enjoy a refined blend of Italian classics, freshly caught seafood, and the distinctive Dutch-Indonesian Rijsttafel. The Pizzeria, set within the hotel’s organic garden, serves crisp, wood-fired pizzas in a tranquil setting. On select evenings, Auntie Luba’s Kitchen invites you to sample traditional Belizean dishes, from curry chicken to coconut shrimp, while Gauguin Grill specialises in charcoal-grilled seafood, with lobster as a particular highlight. For something more informal, the Laughing Fish Bar offers poolside snacks like Dutch grilled cheese, best enjoyed with a tropical cocktail in hand.

STEPHANIE'S VIEW

For those seeking a relaxed coastal escape with a real sense of place, Turtle Inn is a standout. It’s ideal for unwinding after a busy touring itinerary, with breezy cottages, excellent food, and plenty of thoughtful touches and activities, plus Placencia town is just a short bike ride away. Even better, your stay directly supports the local environment, with opportunities to participate in meaningful conservation programmes.

OUR TOP TIP

Combine with sister property Blancaneaux Lodge in the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve where you can discover the ancient civilization of the Maya at the archaeological sites of Caracol, Barton Creek, and Cahal Pech, to name a few.  Or overland from Guatemala after spending time exploring its extraordinary landscapes and centuries-old civilization.
