...The review

Tswalu

The largest private reserve in Southern Africa and famed for its unique biodiversity, Tswalu is unlike anywhere else on this continent.

Tswalu is beyond remote and inconceivably vast, 1200 square kilometres of pristine wilderness where the Kalahari sands meet the mountains and plains of the Karoo.  This is a land of huge skies, black-maned lions and your ‘best bet’ destination for the more rare and elusive creatures like pangolin and aardvark.

“Proudly different, to safari here is to immerse yourself in the landscape - at first glance a rugged and barren place, then on closer inspection – teeming with wildlife. The sense of space adds to the discovery of desert adapted rhino, cheetah and wild dogs whilst out on game drives with your tracker."

Things to do

As sand meets mountain, this habitat holds everything from oryx and sable to the highly prized sightings of the Elusive Five – pangolin, aardvark, bat eared fox, brown hyena and cheetah. Biomes range from mountain to lowveld with wildflower meadows and dense bush, all of which you’ll explore with a private guide and tracker on game drives, walking safaris and on horseback. You might also visit the ancient rock paintings in the foothills of the Korannaberg mountains or get up close to the engaging meerkats which are part of a habituated colony. End the day marvelling at the light-pollution-free nights where you witness unfathomably twinkly skies.

Sleeping

Tswalu has three camps, all designed to be low impact meaning minimal environmental footprint on the land. The camps are spread out so each group had the luxury of space in the vast landscape of grasslands, red dunes and ancient mountains. The newest and perhaps most lavish camp is Loapi with its luxe take on sustainable design where each vast tented home comes with a full complement of staff. Motse lodge and thatched Tarkuni are characterised by low-key luxury which sit in harmony with the surrounding nature yet offering a high standard of service.

Food & Drink

Set amid the rust red dust of the Kalahari, Tswalu’s dining destination Klein JAN holds an unassuming location – a corrugated tin-roofed hut, topped by a weathervane and a skirted by a washing line, acts a portal to the uber-modern wine cellar tunnel and then onto the glass-walled modern restaurant underneath, which has spectacular views that stretch to the distance. This gastronomic haven is intrinsically linked to the land yet strikes out with bold culinary innovation in multi-course menus that change with the seasons. A world-class epicurean encounter in the most remote of settings.

What Stands Out

Exclusivity, personalisation and the raw beauty of Tswalu makes this lodge stand out from other safari outfits in the region – and sitting within the pristine and diverse Kalahari ecosystem means a dramatic location for rare and elusive sightings.

Best For

Seasoned safari-goers and for people who want to gain a deeper understanding of the Kalahari and its amazing wildlife without the time and space pressures of other destinations will love the immersive nature of Tswalu, with every aspect optimised to enhance your experience.

The Verdict

Tswalu in South Africa is a phenomenal lodge in the rugged wilds of the Kalahari which is fittingly difficult to reach but so worth it when you do. A true wilderness experience.
