WHEN TO GO
Pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds make June and September the perfect months to tour the islands.
WHO FOR
Anyone looking to swap the crowds and the cruise ships of Mykonos and Santorini for more traditional Greek charms.
"While the Cyclades islands are Greece’s most celebrated, we have uncovered three under-the-radar gems, which are easily reached and perfect for a leisurely beach holiday or an island-hopping adventure. Each is home to exceptional hotels that set the stage for an unhurried escape: serene, stylish, and utterly indulgent, where every detail whispers luxury and every view feels like a postcard come to life."

High Above the Aegean
Gundari, Folegandros
Cradled by the Aegean Sea and overshadowed by its famous neighbours – Santorini, Milos and Paros – Folegandros is a serene, little-known Greek alternative for those seeking wild beauty and dramatic landscapes. Gundari, a luxurious resort sprawling over 80 acres of raw cliff, is designed to mirror Folegandros’ scenery. Built into the hillside, many suites feature expansive floor-to-ceiling doors and private terraces to maximise views, while the minimalist interiors, done in warm hues and wood furnishings, blend seamlessly with the landscape.
Here, you can start your days by basking in your own private heated pool, or heading to the bar for a refreshing beverage. Later, unwind with one of the spa’s ancient, herb-infused wellness rituals, sound baths, meditation workshops or gentle yoga classes. When you are ready to explore the island, venture to Chora, a lively town with a labyrinth of squares, or hike one of the many nature trails. In the evening, sample traditional Greek cuisine at the the Orizon restaurant. With renowned Michelin-starred chef Lefteris Lazarou at the helm, dining here is an experience for all the senses. The menu is full of ingredients sourced from the resort’s organic gardens.
A Chic Hideaway
Liostasi, Ios
In recent years, Ios has shed its title as the party capital of the Greek islands and is fast becoming a world-class destination for beachside bliss, homespun hospitality and characterful hotels with enviable sea views. Tune into this world of indulgence, well-being and relaxation at Liostasi, a design-led retreat where contemporary exteriors meet rustic details, whimsical artwork and traditionally white interiors.
Gracefully crowning a hillside overlooking Ios’ charming port, the property is an ode to natural beauty and slow living. Each room and suite features a private balcony to soak in the Aegean light, with pools or hot tubs for an elevated stay. Enjoy languid mornings on your terrace, watching the comings and goings of the harbour, unwind in the main pool and take time to recharge in the spa. As evening falls, catch a film under the stars at the open-air cinema and savour modern Greek cuisine at the award-winning Grandma’s Restaurant.
Seaside Calm & Village Life
Avant Mar, Paros
Set against the sunlit charm of Paros’ whitewashed streets and remote beaches, Avant Mar captures the timeless and charming essence of the Cyclades. Elegant white-cube-style buildings set beside a zigzag-shaped pool define the property, offering a world of refinement and comfort. Its 38 rooms and Infinity Suites are each thoughtfully furnished with a pared-back design, featuring Greek marble and tranquil blue hues that mirror the coastal views outside.
Perfectly positioned on Piperi Beach, the hotel is just a short walk from picture-perfect Naoussa. Enjoy leisurely walks to the town’s stylish boutiques, vibrant restaurants and lively evening entertainment. For something less energetic, plunge into the hotel’s exquisite pool, bask in the sunshine on the lounge chairs or spoil yourself with me-time at the spa. Under the evening sky, dine at Matsuhisa Paros, where celebrity chef Nobu has crafted a menu brimming with local flavours.
