This trip is perfect for couples who would like to blend seeing China's iconic landmarks with off-the-beaten-track locales and communities that offer a more compelling and authentic perspective of this ancient country. The trip can be tailored to families.
GOOD TO KNOW
British passport holders can travel visa free up until December 2026.
"China’s beauty lies in its vast landscapes and vibrant culture, so distinctive that it resists comparison with anywhere else. Not only is it one of the world’s oldest civilisations, with more than 5,000 years of recorded history echoing through its buildings and ancient landmarks, but it is also a place where futuristic cities give way to rural regions of dramatic scenery, from rolling terraced rice paddies to the stark peaks of the Himalayas. It is a country of contrasts that stirs the soul and leaves you struggling to put your feelings into words."

Day 1: Arrive in Shanghai
Step off your flight into Shanghai, where a VIP Service Ambassador will greet and guide you through the express immigrations and custom service. At the arrivals hall, you’ll meet your guide who’ll privately escort you to your hotel. Settle in before heading out to explore Shanghai, once a mere backwater fishing village and now a bustling city of contrasts with tree-lined streets and soaring skyscrapers that denote this metropolis as an economic and cultural centre.
STAY: The Peninsula Shanghai
Renowned for being the only building to break ground on The Bund in the past 70 years, The Peninsula Shanghai is ideally placed for your adventures around the city. The property blends Art Deco-inspired interiors with historic elegance and wellness treatments in the award-winning spa. Relish modern European classics and Cantonese favourites in the Michelin-starred restaurants before watching a cultural show at the Peninsula Academy.
Day 2: Skyline views & city exploration
Your first full day is devoted to seeing the city’s iconic sites, starting with heading up the world’s fastest elevator to the top floor of the record-breaking Shanghai Tower. Panoramic views await at the world’s highest observation deck, where you can marvel at the gravity-defying architecture. Head back to ground level and visit Fuxing Park, which once belonged to the Ming Dynasty and is now a popular spot for ballroom dancing, saxophone quartets and locals singing songs en mass.
Traces of older Shanghai await at Xintiandi as do international restaurants, cafes, bars and boutiques. The former French Concession, an enclave governed by France for almost a century until the 1940s, was once the domain of China’s rich and powerful, revolutionaries and movie stars. Creaking hallways of mansions will lead you through the glamour of pre-World War II Shanghai.
Sunset cruise along the Huangpu
Conclude the day around The Bund before embarking on a privately charted Azimut 47 yacht along the river. As the sun dips behind the horizon, your cruise will drop anchor and allow you to take in the scenery at leisure.
Day 3: Explore temples & bazaars
Begin today at Jade Buddha Temple, which houses two Buddhist statues famous throughout China before making your way to Yuyuan Bazaar. Situated in Shanghai’s old town next to the famed Yu Garden, the bazaar is a souvenir hunter’s paradise. Inside, a winding maze of alleyways boast food stalls with local snacks and a collection of shops selling antiques, lanterns, and keepsakes. Head back outside to Yuyuan Garden, an oasis of manicured gardens punctuated with rocks and trees, green ponds and white walls with circular doorways.
Marvel at an ERA2 acrobatics show
End your day witnessing death-defying routines, unbelievable feats of strength and showmanship as acrobats, stuntmen and contortionists entertain at the award-winning ERA2 show.
Day 4: Transfer to Huangshan
Starting early today, you’ll wave goodbye to Shanghai and travel to Huangshan via high speed train. At Huangshan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can expect to find mist-shrouded peaks, craggy rocks, gnarled pine trees and a sea of clouds that wouldn’t look out of place in a fantasy movie. With the peak’s name meaning “Yellow Mountain”, there’s an element of the mystique here which has captured the hearts of photographers, painters and hikers alike. Take the Yuping Cableway up the eastern face and hike 40 minutes to the top for magnificent views.
STAY: Upcloud Shuguangli Villa
Your day will close at the idyllic sanctuary of Upcloud Shuguangli Villa, which is only a stone’s throw away from Huangshan’s iconic landmarks: the Grand Canyon of West Sea, Lotus Peak and the Hundred-step Cloud Ladder. Your villa features bedrooms bathed in natural light and a minimalist design with distinct wooden details. Yoga sessions offer you the chance to rejuvenate amidst lush greenery, while the tea room offers a calm ambiance for quiet reflection.
Day 5: Explore Huangshan
The morning is all about trying on Hanfu, China’s traditional Han-style clothing worn by ancient kings and queens, princes and princesses.
Hike the Xihai Grand Canyon circuit
Once you’ve had your fill of being royalty, don your walking boots and immerse yourself in the mountain’s sea of clouds. Discover unique rock formations, stone peaks and the Grand Canyon’s deep valleys. The circuit today covers up to 15 kilometres and can take up to six hours to complete. Afterwards, return to your hotel for a quiet evening of tantalising flavours and laughter-filled conversations.
Day 6: Transfer to Beijing
The next leg of your journey begins today as you make your way to Beijing. Along the way, stop at Chengkan, a frozen-in-time village set against a backdrop of cobalt slopes and ancient waterways. The site was first constructed 1,800 years ago and many of the buildings have a leaf carved into the stone to remind villagers that they should return to their roots in the same way as a leaf falls from a tree and lands on the tree’s roots.
From here, make your way to Huizhou Culture Museum where you’ll learn all about how Huizhou culture flourished during the Ming and Qing dynasties. A visit to Tunxi Hukai Ink Factory is also possible, where you can try your hand at making your own Chinese traditional ink sticks, before walking 10 minutes to Tunxi Old Street – the most well-preserved historic street in China. When ready, you’ll catch a flight to Beijing where a local guide will escort you to your hotel for the next few nights.
STAY: The Peninsula Beijing
Tonight you’ll be staying at The Peninsula Beijing, the only all-suite hotel in the city and steps away from the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Wangfujing shopping street.
Day 7: Wander Jinshanling Great Wall
This morning, you’ll drive to Jinshanling Great Wall where you’ll have time to marvel at how this site rises from the sea in the east before extending 5,000 miles to the deserts of China’s far west. Jinshanling is one of the most picturesque parts of the Great Wall, free from crowds, wild in nature and steeped in centuries of history. A short gondola-ride, followed by a three-hour hike, offers an unbelievable view of countless watchtowers stacked against endless mountain silhouettes.
Enojy a Tai Chi lesson
Enjoy an expert-led Tai Chi lesson at the Jinshanling Great Wall, discovering how this traditional Chinese martial art prioritises mindful movement, breathing exercises, and cultural immersion while overlooking mountainous landscapes.
Day 8: Step inside the Forbidden City
This morning you’ll explore the Forbidden City, a massive imperial palace once home to China’s emperors and the geographic centre of this endless metropolis. Take time to wander the streets, which were closed off to all but the royal family and their entourage of eunuchs and concubines for 600 years until 1924.
Explore Hutongs' alleyways
Make your way into the Hutongs, the crisscrossing maze of courtyards and alleyways where elders while away the night playing a game of Chinese chess and shopkeepers sell traditional snacks like jianbing (pancakes) and baozi (steamed buns). Look out for the abode of a man who has won fame and fortune through the legendary prowess of his fighting crickets.
Day 9: Transfer to Xi'an
Today is all about discovering the old capital of Xi’an, where emperors ruled China for thousands of years. You’ll travel here by high speed train, then take your time looking at the treasured Terracotta Warriors, which were discovered in 1974 when a group of farmers made a legendary discovery while digging a well. These farmers struck a chamber containing 8,000 soldiers – a terracotta army – belonging to China’s first emperor. These were built to guard the emperor’s tomb for eternity.
STAY: Sofitel Legend People's Grand Hotel Xi'an
Tonight, check into the Sofitel Legend People’s Grand Hotel Xi’an, which is ideally situated inside the city walls and a mere 10 minutes from the Great Mosque, Drum Tower and Bell Tower. Relax in the spacious rooms, make use of the hotel’s fitness centre and indoor pool or dine at the on-site restaurant Dolce Via, serving authentic Italian food with fresh ingredients.
Day 10: Explore Louguantai
Hop into your private vehicle and drive two hours to Louguantai Giant Panda Breeding Centre, where you can come face-to-face with China’s cutest national animal – the bamboo-munching Giant Panda. With a natural science and panda expert leading the way, you’ll spend around two hours in the research base, learning with every step.
Wander Lou Guan Tai Temple
A five minute drive will bring you to Lou Guan Tai Temple, which is where Taoism was created and you’ll explore today with a modern Tao philosopher. Here, renowned Lao Tsu wrote Dao De Jing as well as lecturing its principles to Taoism’s first followers.
Day 11: Transfer to Longsheng
From Xi’an, you’ll board a flight to Guilin and from there a private chauffeur will escort you along mountainous roads to Longsheng, home to a colourful mixture of Dong, Huang, Yao, and Miao people. During your time here, you’ll discover a plethora of cultural highlights, including the Dragon’s Backbone Rice Terraces, which are a group of large-scale rice terraces built into the hillside and date back more than 650 years. These sprawling terraces are still carved out of the mountainside using simple traditional methods and have become popular motifs in Chinese paintings.
STAY: Li'an Lodge
Captivated by the stunning rice terraces during a photography excursion, acclaimed photographer Keren Su later came back to establish Li’an Lodge. This distinctive retreat, known for its sweeping panoramic scenery, was constructed entirely with traditional Chinese tongue-and-groove techniques. Reaching the peaceful hideaway involves a 30–40 minute hike, but the breathtaking views make the journey worthwhile. Each cosy room is uniquely styled to reflect a different element of Chinese arts and crafts, creating a welcoming sanctuary after a full day of adventure.
Day 12: Hike through Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces
Step into a landscape that feels untouched by time as you set out on a scenic walk through these remarkable layered fields, their water-filled curves draped across the hills like flowing ribbons. The terraces form a living artwork that changes with the light and seasons, while also serving as home to diverse local communities.
Explore an Zhuang Minority Village
Your journey begins in Ping An, a picturesque settlement nestled within the Longsheng Rice Terraces. This village is largely inhabited by the Zhuang people, known for a heritage stretching back more than 2,000 years and for their intricate woven textiles featuring striking geometric designs. Take time to stroll through the village, meet residents, and admire the traditional craftsmanship that has become prized even in modern boutiques in Shanghai and Beijing.
Continue onward on a roughly two-hour hike through verdant valleys and terraced slopes, immersing yourself in both the natural beauty and the cultural traditions that define this extraordinary region.
Day 13: Transfer to Yangshuo
Today is another transfer day, but this time you’ll be travelling to Yangshuo, one of the most famous towns in all of China. To get here, you’ll take the karst mountain roads, offering you the chance to take in the area’s laidback atmosphere and off the beaten path pastoral beauty. On the way, stop off at Longji Dazhai Rice Terraces, where a cable car will take you to the viewing point for a bird’s eye view of the terraces.
STAY: Banyan Tree Yangshuo Resort
Check into your hotel and unwind in the spacious rooms inspired by the area’s natural beauty and overlooking the peaceful Li River. Enjoy the hotel’s indulgent treatments based on ancient health and beauty practices at the in-house spa and Chinese favourites at the on-site restaurant.
Day 14: Embark on the Yulong bike trail
To truly take in the breathtaking scenery of lush green fields, mist-shrouded karst mountains, and gently curving waterways surrounding Yangshuo, embark on a cycling expedition. Hop on a bike and follow the peaceful banks of the Yulong River, a quieter branch of the Li River. Over the course of this relaxed two-hour ride, you’ll cruise along level trails, pass rural hamlets, and enjoy the simple pleasure of sunshine and fresh air as the landscape unfolds around you.
Go bamboo rafting
Then you’ll spend time drifting along the Yulong River on a traditional bamboo raft, where crystal-clear waters weave through dramatic karst peaks and verdant foliage, with glimpses of water buffalo and farmers tending fields along the banks. This serene 90-minute journey, guided by your boatman, feels like floating through a classical Chinese painting, offering time to relax and take in the scenery.
Day 15: Transfer to Hong Kong
Your day begins when your guide meets you in the hotel lobby to start the journey to Hong Kong. After checking out, you’ll drive approximately two hours to the Guilin Train Station, where your guide and private chauffeur will assist with check-in for the high-speed train to Hong Kong, ensuring a smooth and comfortable transfer. Once a cluster of quiet fishing villages, Hong Kong has evolved into one of the world’s fastest-paced cities, blending towering modern skyscrapers with traces of its historic coastal past.
STAY: Upper House Hong Kong
Tonight, you’ll stay at the Upper House Hong Kong, an elegant retreat that offers a serene escape from the city’s energy. With just 117 rooms, the minimalist design creates a calming atmosphere while large windows frame sweeping views of the bustling streets below. Dining options showcase a fusion of European, Asian, and American flavours, available in your room, in the hotel’s restaurant, or on The Lawn – a tranquil rooftop garden tucked among Hong Kong’s skyscrapers.
Day 16: Spend the day exploring Hong Kong
Start your day riding the world’s longest outdoor covered escalator from Central to the Mid-Levels, passing historic shophouses, cafés, and modern high-rises. Visit Tai Kwun, a restored former police station and prison featuring art exhibitions, guided tours, and a rooftop terrace with panoramic city views. For lunch, enjoy a 75-minute Aqua Luna Dim Sum Cruise to the fishing village of Lei Yue Mun while savouring dim sum as you sail past junks and yachts. End the day on the Peak Tram to Victoria Peak for breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour, surrounding islands, and Hong Kong’s skyline.
Day 17: Safe travels home
As your journey concludes, a private transfer will collect you from your hotel and escort you to the airport for your flight home or onward travels.
