Six Senses Southern Dunes, The Red Sea

With a burgeoning tourist industry, Saudi Arabia is on the lips of curious travellers the world over. Tapping into the zeitgeist as usual, Six Senses are opening a new outpost here in late 2023, in the wilds of the desert with a luxury camp that mimics the undulations of the sand dunes, while offering a high level of experience in this remote corner of Saudi Arabia. After landing at an airport at the Red Sea, you travel southeast along the coastal highway before winding through mountains and wadis to reach the hidden spot that is Six Senses Southern Dunes. Although remote, the area was once part of the busy Nabataean trade route, transporting incense, silk and textiles – their travelling camp would pitch here and gather around the fire. Today, visitors will do the same, replicating a custom that harks back to 106 CE and a specially designed centre will enlighten you on the ancient traditions of this region. However, Southern Dunes is all about the future too, with a Foster + Partners designed build, focusing on eco-credentials and light touch architecture. With such an unusual destination as its location paired with a world-leading approach to design, Southern Dunes is set to be a star.

“The heart of the resort is the oasis, its design based on a desert flower with a self-shading canopy which touches the ground only lightly; like the Nabatean camps, the structure can be removed without a trace.”

Six Senses Fort Barwara, Rajasthan

Six Senses’ first entry in India, Fort Barwara is located in the culturally rich region of Rajasthan. Remodelling a 14th century fort, the hotel is a sensitive conservation effort which brings together two palaces and two temples wrapped around by the original fortification wall. Like many historic properties in Rajasthan, the building is filled with a regal sense of times past, with historic features like ornate lattice work, vintage trunks, original cornicing, Rajasthani décor and wrought iron lanterns. However, the hotel has been imbued with a modern outlook, with a state-of-the-art fitness and wellness area which incorporates both western and eastern programs, plus aerial yoga, meditation temple and herb garden adding to the spa highlights. Dining here is also a delight with three restaurants serving Indian and international specialities and for a special treat allow the hotel to arrange dinner in a private, atmospheric location within the fort.

"Exploring Rajasthan is an amazing experience, made more so by this new Six Senses outpost, offering historic surroundings and luxe comfort, a place to recharge."

Six Senses Shaharut, The Negev Desert

This could be one of the most dramatic destinations yet for a Six Senses hotel. Getting to Six Senses Shaharut, in Israel’s Negev Desert is part of the journey: travel by road or helicopter through a rugged, biblical landscape where seemingly endless horizons are rippled by ochre sand dunes. Hidden in the Arava Valley is Six Senses Shararut: where suites with pools and a sensational spa complete with hammam and sauna are camouflaged into the cliffs. Views are startling, especially the declining sun as it sets the boundless, honeycomb sands aflame or even better at sunrise – when you’ll come to realise why the resort is called Shaharut – meaning ‘moment before dawn’. Get closer to the landscape with Six Senses’ sensitive introduction to desert experiences, walk the dunes with story-telling Bedouins, camp under pristine starry skies or take a twilight camel safari. There’s a sense of total openness here, with the expansive vistas allowing mind-expanding experiences in this little-known part of the world.

"For those who crave to experience the majestic emptiness of the desert, Six Senses Shaharut provides enlightening forays into the sandy landscapes, set against a backdrop of luxurious hospitality."
