Porto Zante, Zakynthos

With a raft of awards under their belt, Porto Zante on the Greek Island of Zakynthos pulls well ahead of the crowd, presenting as a supremely top-end and upmarket place to stay. Families and couples alike are attracted to this good-looking yet low-key resort because of its nine, uber-private villas where you can enjoy the seclusion of a luxe hideaway while still enjoying the benefits of a five-star hotel.

The villas, which range from one bedroom to four, are dispersed along the verdant greenery of the coastline, and each abode has serene Ionian Sea views, a private pool and opens out onto its own section of beach. Bespoke services come as standard at Porto Zante, and with two members of staff per guest, your holiday is guaranteed to be a hit whether you’re snorkelling or diving the azure waters, having fun with the resort’s complimentary watersports or simply relaxing in peace in your private villa, cocktail in hand.

“Luxe private villas meet five-star service, an unpretentious vibe and an exceptionally beautiful Greek island: Porto Zante is a winner for summer holidays.”

The Ionian Sea around Zakynthos is of the brightest blue colour rivalling that of the Caribbean – explore further on a private yacht cruise, sailing past the shipwreck on Navagio beach which graces many a postcard, discovering the wild beauty of the Blue Caves and glimpsing endangered Caretta-Caretta turtles on Marathonisi Island.

Grand Hotel Son Net, Mallorca

Brought to you by the owners of Finca Cortesin in Andalucia, Mallorca has a reinvented beauty: Grand Hotel Son Net. A flawlessly restored 17th-century palacio, the attention to detail at this Mallorcan gem is astonishing, blending heritage finds and vintage furniture with modern artworks and impeccable interior design.

Its location also adds greatly to its appeal, encased by lush Mediterranean gardens, soaring cypress trees and the verdant peaks of the encircling Serra de Tramuntana Mountain range. The hotel is also only 15-minutes’ drive from cosmopolitan Palma, giving you the best of rural seclusion and city splendour. With a sizeable pool, a rejuvenating wellness centre, two restaurants which serve wholesome food plucked from the garden, a bar and an on-site vineyard there’s plenty of reasons to stay put but nearby hikes and cycle rides will keep those who prefer to stay active happy too. A stroll to the nearby Puigpunyent village gives you a taste of rural Mallorcan life – browse the weekly market before a coffee in the square, watching life go by.

“Grand Son Net provides an elegant entrée into rural Mallorca yet is only 15 minutes from the sophistication of Palma.”

Explore the hotel’s own vineyard and winery where they bottle white wine made from malvasia grapes grown on-site. Inspect the vines with a viticulture expert then enjoy a wine tasting with up to six of the estate’s wines.

Royal River, Tenerife

Inspired by Africa, the tropics and the French Riveria, this adults-only haven in Tenerife is a whimsically designed hotel that taps into childlike imaginations while providing a high-end experience. Offering 50 villas, the spacious abodes are sculpted either around a purpose-built winding river or open out onto a lagoon pool, perfect for those that like to swim straight from their suite.

Overflowing with greenery and tall palm trees, Royal River is located in the exclusive Costa Adeje, in southwest Tenerife, close to the Atlantic Ocean’s wide beaches and near to a championship golf course. The ambience here is very much set to relaxation – spend the day by your plunge pool, on your private sun deck or lazily floating down the river. Head to the spa and be welcomed by a foot soak and head massage before a rejuvenating hot volcanic stone massage. Come evening, enjoy ocean views from the rooftop bar and ponder the evening repast – perhaps a tasting menu at the Flamingo Bistro with innovative takes on French classics, or zingy Asian dishes at Kokoro, both making a gastronomic finale to a perfect day at peaceful Royal River.

“With an interesting design and all your creature comforts and more, this Canary Island hotel is the perfect choice for adults looking for a stylish retreat.”

If you can bear to leave your luxurious enclave at Royal River, we recommend a day out on the hotel’s private vessel, the Royal Boat for a fishing trip to reel in ‘big game’ such as blue fin tuna, marlin and grouper. As well as the excitement of the day’s catch, enjoy a chef-prepared lunch on board as well as refreshments throughout the day.

Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea, Sicily

There’s something about Sicily in the sunshine that’s so evocative of summer from the glint of an Aperol spritz, retro striped sun loungers to gleaming cobbled streets and plates piled high with pasta. Combining Sicily with the extremely high quality we associate with Belmond means a stay at Villa Sant’Andrea will jettison you into holiday heaven. Even better, this year sees the opening of the stylish Belmond beach club set on the idyllic shores of Mazzaro Bay.

Timeless and iconic, the Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea has an excellent location, sitting alongside a pebble beach just below the historic town of Taormina, suiting those who love to sightsee in the morning, and be on the beach by the afternoon. Inside, the hotel has a classy ambience with unfailingly helpful staff who do their utmost to ensure your stay is as best it can be. And with gorgeously romantic suites with sea views, a tropical garden and pool plus a terrace restaurant serving Sicilian favourites overlooking the craggy seascape of Sicily, you can’t help but fall in love.

“Classic and supremely comfortable, the Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea is a luxe basecamp to enjoy Sicily’s rich history and culinary prowess.”

Sicily’s sights are plentiful and span the millennia of history but, like many a heritage hotspot, are prone to overcrowding. Let us take the lead on this, booking you a private expert guide who knows the best spots, at the right time. We love the stylish rickshaw tours around Taormina enjoying views of Mount Etna and following the footsteps of Orson Welles, DH Lawrence and Truman Capote.

The Romanos at Costa Navarino, Greece

Greece’s Peloponnese region is where in-the-know travellers go to escape the summer holiday crowds. An immaculate, upscale resort sitting on a wild and empty beach in southwestern Peloponnese, Costa Navarino delivers the sweet spot between opulent Messenian style, the luxury of space and abundant experiences.

Welcoming to both families and couples alike, the resort is large and lavish with room for everyone, sprawled across the sand dunes and sitting alongside a pristine golf course. One of our favourite family-friendly options is the Master Infinity Villa, which has a private pool and opens directly onto the sandy shore of the beach. Kids love the aqua park, bowling alley, climbing wall, tennis and basketball courts while adults can be soothed in the huge spa or tee off on the golf course. With a staggering 14 restaurants there is plenty of choice; after dinner most gravitate to the atmospheric agora for a post-prandial drink and a visit to the ice cream shop.

“Found in the wilds of southwestern Peloponnese this world-class hotel has it all, making summer holidays an absolute breeze.”

With a focus on local Messenian experiences, join a family in the nearby village of Pylos for a cookery course to learn how to make traditional dishes such as feta pie and stuffed tomatoes, sampling locally grown olive oil as well as organic wine from the Navarino vineyards.
