Road Tripping in the USA
From road trips in sunny California, motoring through the deserts and canyons of the south-west national parks or cruising the vibrant Deep South, road tripping in the US is full of adventure.
As with all our trips, the detail in a self-drive holiday is no less than any other. We curate your itinerary with realistic driving times alongside awe-inspiring sights, booking you into fabulous hotels to lay your head at the end of a long day. If you fancy flying for one leg, taking the train or having a private car and driver instead, we can arrange that too.
"Unforgettable journeys, wide open roads, and the freedom to travel at your pace - a road trip offers this in abundance. Whether it’s the sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, a multi-day adventure through national parks or iconic desert landscapes, you’ll experience the very best of the United States behind the wheel.’’
Turn California dreaming into a reality on a classic coastal road trip, from San Francisco to Los Angeles on Highway 1. Begin in ‘San Fran’, with a cable car ride to Fisherman’s Wharf, a journey across the water to infamous Alcatraz and yacht sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge. Pick up your car and head south on the Pacific Coast Highway, stopping to discover Monterey’s rich marine life along the scenic 17 Mile Drive. Arrive at this road trip’s most dramatic section: the twisting coastal road of steep cliff-faces and unforgettable vistas that is Big Sur. With the ocean to your right and the sun on your face, this is road tripping personified.
Your next stop is chic Santa Barbara; enjoy its wide, golden beaches and Spanish-style buildings. Watch the surfers at Stearns Wharf, discover nearby vineyards or kayak among the Channel Islands. Stop by San Luis Obispo to spot elephant seals frolicking in the sea before rounding off your road trip in L.A. We recommend basing yourself in beachside Santa Monica, where you’ll find a great choice of sophisticated restaurants and chic bars.
Property Star: Post Ranch Inn
For ultimate views of the Californian coastline, stay at Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, located just off Highway 1. Clasped to the cliffside, the inn is made up of a series of architecturally designed wooden and glass cabins, each offering privacy and uninterrupted Pacific views. Along with gazing at the ocean panorama, swim in one of three striking pools or take time in the spa for soothing massages. The restaurant is unfeasibly located in a stilted glass cube on the cliff, offering superb views as you dine on freshly caught seafood and local Wagyu beef.
West America’s National Parks
Leave the glitzy neon hues of Las Vegas far behind as the landscape opens out into the desert vistas of Utah, making way for Zion National Park. Canyons, cliffs and giant sculpted boulders characterise the park – perfect for exploration on foot. Onwards to Bryce National Park to discover its tangerine-tinted spires rising from the rocky plateau – stop for a picnic amid the lofty pinnacles.
Next, drive towards the border with Arizona, where an abundance of natural riches lie. Admire archetypal desert scenery in Monument Valley, with the arresting landmark of John Ford Point. Lake Powell’s glassy waters are nearby for you to navigate by kayak or stand-up paddle board. You could even spend a few days on a houseboat. Or consider heading to Horseshoe Bend where sheer cliffs drop 300-metres to the Colorado River below. Finish on a high at one of America’s finest natural sights, the Grand Canyon.
Property Star: Amangiri
Desert design hotel Amangiri appears hewn into cubes, carved out of the rock it sits alongside. Lying at the heart of Navajo country in Utah, Amangiri’s striking architecture blends seamlessly with its 180-million-year-old desert and sandstone surrounds. Timeless and deeply affecting, a stay here means exploring ancient Navajo traditions alongside hushed luxury. Evenings are for relaxing fireside in your private outdoor desert lounge, gazing at one of the most unpolluted night skies in the world.
Charleston and Savannah
A road trip that meanders through the historic Deep South, explore the diverse culture, cuisine and heritage of one of America’s lesser-known areas to UK travellers. Start in the elegant 18th century walled city of Charleston, characterised by cobblestone streets, pastel-hued antebellum houses and secret gardens. Head to the infamous Fort Sumter, located in Charleston Harbour – a must for history buffs. Take a break from the wheel to sample the classic Southern dishes of shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes and more.
Continue your journey onto Beaufort, located on the largest sea island of Port Royal. Admire the verandah-wrapped mansions and moss-draped oak trees the region is known for. The next stop on your road trip is Savannah, the quintessential city of the Deep South. This foodie capital offers more than 100 restaurants in the heart of the Historic District. Finish your tour at a luxury resort on the Golden Isles of Georgia, brimming with outdoor activities or simply get lost among the beauty of oak trees draped with Spanish moss and rejuvenate on miles of beaches.
Property Star: Montage Palmetto Bluff
Hugged by 20,000 acres of maritime forest, Montage Palmetto Bluff sits by a river in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. A classic and extremely comfortable American resort, the hotel’s unspoiled setting with riverside and lagoon access means boating, kayaking and paddleboarding are daily activities along with fishing, horse-riding and clay pigeon shooting. A sunset cruise along the May River in the hotel’s yacht is a beautiful way to end the day and you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins.
