Big Sky Country
You and your tribe are headed to Paws Up, Montana, for a journey that will introduce you to the exhilaration of an all-American adventure in a remote wilderness, guarded by the snow-covered mountains of the Rockies. At Paws Up, extraordinary experiences are the backbone of every stay, played out under epic, heart-soaring scenery.
So, what does a day on 37,000 acres of rugged ranch land look like?
Wake Up Call
Reconnect with nature by choosing to sleep in a luxury tent: a lavish and perfectly appointed affair with a copper bath tub, feather beds and on-call butlers and chefs. Early risers can experience their first activity of the day as sunlight begins to warm the scented pine trees. Guests are encouraged to grab a rod and stroll down to the gently-sloped pebble beach for fly-fishing in the crystal-clear waters of the river that runs alongside the camp. Breakfast is served in the open-sided dining pavilion, accompanied by the gentle warble of the river, where you can expect a twist on all-American favourites such as Huckleberry pancakes, crispy maple-cured bacon and freshly baked bread.
Wild West Adventures
Then you’re ready to take on big-sky country. Now could be the perfect moment to teach your little ones the skill of trout fishing either from the bank or on a boat with a guide to steer you to the best spots. Ornithologists can happily spot condors, bald eagles and ospreys circling in the thermals above. Lunch may be a picnic on the riverbank, surrounded by wild meadows. Got a little wannabe cowgirl or cowboy? Cattle drives are a great adventure for the family and show children life through the eyes of a Montana wrangler. Spend an afternoon experiencing the thrill of driving cattle home on horseback. Get up close to the awe-inspiring Rockies on a quad bike tour, an exhilarating adventure that will have both adrenaline and mud flying as you weave through valleys, forests and open grassy plains. Finish on Lookout Rock and study the meandering Blackfoot River which could be the stage for your next adventure: white-water rafting, canoeing or even abseiling down the sheer cliff face!
As the sun starts its decline, children with energy left might like to be accompanied to archery or the high ropes course while parents take time out with a massage in Spa Town – a collection of canvas tents with pure relaxation in mind. Later reconvene at camp for cocktails made with fresh Huckleberries, before deciding where to dine. Consider joining a Montana Long Table dinner in the river valley, a masterful meal that raises the bar on al fresco dining and showcases farm-to-table produce under the watchful eye of roaming elk and looming mountains. Families wanting privacy can arrange for meats and fish to be brought to their own outdoor kitchen for a cook-your-own BBQ. For something truly special, an old-fashioned horse and cart will take you to the banks of the Blackfoot River where tables are laid out for a traditional chuck wagon dinner of Angus prime rib, whole roasted rainbow trout, fresh corn and grilled asparagus. Back at your camp, a ‘Smore-ologist’ awaits to help prepare a sticky campfire dessert under a vast star-filled Montana sky.
Add on adventure
The joy of summer holidays mean that families have more flexibility to extend the fun. Why not complete your American adventure with a jaunt in San Francisco, just a short flight away? Enjoy laid-back days with the iconic Golden Gate as your backdrop, take the traditional cable car to Fisherman’s Wharf or visit historic island prison Alcatraz by ferry. Just an hour out of town is America’s most famous wine producing area Napa Valley, which is home to fine Cabernet Sauvignon blends. Further afield is Yosemite National Park, where you’ll be awed by epic landscapes of glacial mountains, alpine meadows and meandering rivers. Get up close to the giant sequoia trees – the largest trees in the world and douse yourself under Yosemite Falls.
Come home filled with wonder from your all-American family adventure.
