Our favourite animal experiences and where to find them

Our team travel far and wide every year, road testing properties and seeking new experiences. Coming face-to-face with a wild animal always rates highly – but what are our team’s all-time favourite animal encounters? Read on to find out….

Whale Sharks – Ningaloo Reef, Australia

Steph – Personal Travel Designer

‘I swam with whale sharks on Ningaloo Reef. It was an incredible experience. Although they appear to swim slowly, in fact their tails are so powerful, and you have to move fast to keep up.’

Piranha Fish, Amazon River, Brazil

Richard – Personal Travel Designer

‘Half the fun of swimming in the swirling brown waters of the Amazon is not knowing what’s below. After a swim we did a spot of fishing and caught several piranhas – entertaining but not very relaxing having them snapping about in the bottom of a dugout canoe.’

Tiger, Rajasthan, India

Sarah – Personal Travel Designer

‘Having grown up on a diet of Rudyard Kipling, seeing my first tiger in Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan staying at Sher Bagh was an incredible experience. I found it unexpectedly emotional – my eyes filled with tears.’

Horse Safari, Okavango Delta, Botswana

Katie – Marketing Manager

‘Spending my childhood in Africa meant I was spoilt with formative animal experiences. However, on one of my many return visits, I went on an amazing horse safari. Galloping alongside giraffe on the Okavango Delta floodplains and swimming on horseback through the delta’s channels will be a memory I will never forget.’

Komodo dragon, Flores, Indonesia

Pete – Product Manager

‘After specifically being told not to go near the Komodo dragons I couldn’t resist getting up close for a picture with the prehistoric-looking animal. Although afterwards, when our guide told us about the deadly way in which Komodos bite their prey then stalk them until they slowly die, I was amazed at my foolhardiness.’

Leopards, Serengeti, Tanzania

Ben – Personal Travel Designer

‘During a game drive in the Serengeti we suddenly came across two leopards slinking through the fig trees. Dusk was setting in and any thoughts of sundowners were banished as we tracked the leopards and watched their synchronised movements as they hunted and eventually killed a bushbuck. Mesmerising.’

Hawksbill Turtles, Cobblers Cove, Barbados

Amy – Product Manager

‘It was incredible to be surrounded by beautiful Hawksbill turtles at Cobblers Cove, Barbados. I was almost too scared to go in as I didn’t want to hurt them but as soon as I did I saw how gracefully they swam around me.’
