Maldives

Located on the pristine Thaa Atoll, Como Maalifushi is one of our favourite Maldives hotels. Although absolutely a five-star resort, it’s not flashy or pretentious, allowing you to totally relax and be looked after with friendly service amid a low-key ambience. Fragrant and fresh, COMO fans will recognise the signature COMO scents of eucalyptus and bergamot which emanate from the Shambhala spa, promising further rejuvenation.

Como Maalifushi is a good option for both families, couples or those going solo who will feel utterly at ease in either in the over-water villas or a beach villas, both of which are decorated in a pared-back style with lots of natural materials, marble, wood and thatch. Como Maalifushi is also known for its wellness and coming here means you can be as healthy as you wish with the specially created COMO Shambhala menus running alongside the restaurant menus.

“This is a tropical paradise that does it all in understated style leaving you to simply enjoy it, whether that’s sunset yoga, snorkelling the house reef, visiting the exceptional spa or dining on seafood.”

MUST DO

The world-class Shambhala Spa is an integral part of the Maalifushi resort whether you pop in for a soothing massage in a spa pavilion that sits over the Indian Ocean or immerse yourself in dedicated wellness program that promises to aid sleep, help you glow or be active.

Koh Samui, Thailand

In many ways, Thailand is the holiday that keeps giving, and in particular, the tropical island of Koh Samui on the east coast – a place to totally give in to the exotic seascapes, white sand beaches and miles of coconut groves, alongside temples, waterfalls and the Ang Thong marine park. One of our favourite places to stay on Samui has to be the Six Senses Samui.

Cradled into the jungly hillside overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, Six Senses Samui consists of a collection of villas, most with private pools, all with views of either jungle or the sea. Made up of polished wood with thatched roofs, the houses resemble a fishing village, yet inside is a masterpiece of light, space and luxe furnishings. Doors and windows slide fully open to reveal verdant greenery and an outside pool deck and lavish daybeds make it very easy to slip into relaxation mode.

“Six Senses Koh Samui is accessible in under an hour from Bangkok, and here you’ll find a world of tranquillity, excellent service and delectable food in restaurants carved into the cliffside.”

MUST DO

As you might imagine, this Six Senses property has a high-quality offering for its spa and wellness. Try the Thai healing therapy, based on ancient techniques – the ultimate in tension relief.

SUMBA ISLAND

The island of Sumba may not be on your radar, nor is it particularly easy to get to. However, if you’re looking for an alternative beach holiday somewhere utterly different for a week or two then let us present Cap Karoso, part of East Nusa Tenggara in eastern Indonesia.

Wild, remote and undeveloped best describes Sumba, an island five times the size of Bali, yet with very little tourism. Put on the travel map by standout property NIHI, Cap Karoso is a different offering, modern yet rooted, and one hour from the airport (you will need to fly first to Bali, then connect on to Sumba). With modern villas that come with private pools, set amid an organic farm, Cap Karoso incorporates Sumbanese elements with the use of the traditional tall buildings, which are built to house the spirits of their ancestors. Inside the décor is made up of teak and rattan with local art and pottery adding authentic touches. Opening out onto a wild beach, there are opportunities for diving and surfing, plus visits to waterfalls jungles and the iridescent waters of lake Weekuri.

“Sumba is an island of cultural discovery waiting to be explored with its ancient customs, indigenous tombs, wild beaches and a thriving ikat fabric cultivation.”

MUST DO

Cap Karoso offers many ways to immerse yourself in the island’s traditions. Join the artist residency where you have a chance to collaborate with a local artisan or explore the nearby village of Kodi – learning about ikat weaving, fishing, horse-riding and shamans.

SEYCHELLES

On the edge of the far southern Amirantes islands, the remote Four Seasons Desroches Island occupies a sensational spot of which desert island fantasy seems to be the most fitting description. This private island has miles of blindingly white sand beaches, circled by cerulean-blue sea with villas cleverly hidden in landscaped gardens between tangles of wild jungle.

A day in paradise at Four Seasons Desroches could mean cycling the sandy tracks through lush foliage to discover empty beaches, where staff will have loungers and a picnic lunch waiting for you or indulging yourself at the spa where the ‘four elements of nature’ will soothe you. Strategically placed hammocks at Desroches mean that downtime is always close at hand, although panoramic sunset views and dinner at the Lighthouse should not be missed.

“Perfect for those that like to fish but also relax in luxe style at the end of the day, Four Seasons Desroches is found on its own private island.”

MUST DO

Many come to this part of the world for its renowned deep sea fishing and Desroches can take you to the best spots for landing a giant trevally in the deep. There is also flats fishing at Poivre Atoll and St. Joseph’s Atoll where you can reel in a bone fish from the translucent waters.
