Leobo Private Reserve

An exclusive use lodge set within its own 20,000-acre reserve, Leobo is a private safari house with a creative and sometimes adrenaline-fuelled twist.

Leobo feels like an amalgamation of a Bond Villain’s hilltop hideaway and the Thunderbirds secret headquarters. Just by looking at the fantastical architecture, with the silhouette a heady mixture of domes, turrets and vast thatched roofs, you can tell this place celebrates the more unusual side to safari. The lodge sits on a bluff overlooking its wild playground below, as much an escape from reality as a retreat from the modern world. Malaria-free and suiting families and large groups of friends, Leobo makes the ultimate wilderness get together.

“A private playground deep in the stunning landscape of the Waterberg Hills, Leobo has exceptional service underpinned by extraordinary adventures delivered in a stunning South African setting.”

Things to do

Let your imagination run riot because Leobo is all about bringing dreams to life, facilitated by an incredibly hands-on team. Fly-fishing, horse-riding and game drives are just the start of the included options list, quickly escalating to paintball battles between Leobo’s helicopter and the opposing team on quad bikes below. Kick up some dust on off-road moon buggies or dirt bikes and then spend an afternoon at the mountain lookout with a barbecue and drinks. With none of the constraints of having dangerous game on the reserve, it is possible to explore extensively on foot on nature walks, birdwatching trips and hikes to caves to marvel at ancient rock art. After a day in the wilds, the roof top observatory is the perfect place to wind down with spectacular dark skies overhead.

Sleeping

Rooms are split between the Observatory Villa which sleeps up to ten people in two master suites, a third suite plus a children’s bunk room – and the lodge, which sleeps a further 16 people in eight cottages should you wish. There are sleepout options too, high up on the mountainside or by the river making options super flexible to fit around the groups needs or whims.

Food & Drink

The rate at Leobo covers all food and drinks with a top chef on hand to whip up what you want, when you want. Creative meals are served in a variety of locations while the wine cellar has the finest Cape vintages on tap. Kick back and relax on the deck enjoying sundowner cocktails overlooking the plains or head up to the rooftop bar for spectacular pre-dinner aperitifs with incredible views.

What We Think

Leobo isn’t trying to be a pure safari lodge, but rather a luxurious lodge with exceptional and exciting activities on hand. For those desperate to see more wildlife then trips to neighbouring reserves are possible but the ethos of Leobo is all about having fun in beautiful surroundings. It pairs well with either Madikwe or Kruger for a more serious Big Five safari as well as Mozambique or Mauritius for some beach time.

Best For

The owner has children of his own which shows in the well thought out childcare options making Leobo great for large families. Equally, for a group of friends or a special occasion, Leobo works beautifully as your stay can be as structured or as relaxed as you wish. With so many activities on hand, there is something to do for everyone – yet it is relaxed enough for those who want to do nothing but relax and take in 360° views of the African bush not to feel guilty.

The Verdict

There is nothing more luxurious than no rules and no limits and at Leobo you have just that plus just about everything else you can dream up – and the team are wholly dedicated to make it happen. This is the perfect place to pair indulgence and adventure with flora and fauna all in one magnificent setting.
