Hot Right Now: The Maldives
Say goodbye to dreary skies and usher in a colour language of verdant greens and cobalt blues: the tropical allure of winter sun in the Maldives is boundless.
Our Head of Product Caroline Coetzee reports back with her insight from a recent trip to the Maldives.
One of the original pioneers in the Maldives, Huvafen Fushi returns this year with its newly unveiled redesign – a reimagining of an icon. Chic and graceful, the 46 fully revamped villas are a vision in soft natural woods and muted colours which reflect the beauty of surrounding lush jungle, pristine beaches and house reefs.
The resort was the first in the Maldives to offer plunge pools in every room and the revamp sees Huvafen take it up a notch with villas boasting a very spoiling two pools. We love the two-pool beach villa where the second pool sits fully enclosed in a secluded garden area, perfect for utter privacy. Just added are Two Bedroom Ocean Pavilions which are private retreats with mesmerising views of the Indian Ocean and the new Two Bedroom Beach House with its large open plan spaces. Dining options have been elevated and we love its laid back, fast and easy access and genuinely attentive staff.
“Although two pools for one villa seems extravagant, it’s actually the ultimate indulgence, making Huvafen Fushi stand out in the luxe Maldives market.”
With a marine environmental scientist, play your part in protecting the beautiful house reef by growing coral in a protected coral nursery. In years to come your coral will thrive – come by and see its progress on your next stay!
Six Senses Kanuhura
You can always rely on Six Senses to bring excellence to whatever they touch and their new outpost Six Senses Kanuhura in the Maldives is no exception. Set on a fairly large island, Kanuhura encapsules luxe island living with enough space to explore its jungly interior and have walks on the beach as well the utilising the gorgeous Indian Ocean. There are also an additional two islands which you can enjoy Robinson Crusoe-esque adventures.
Characterised by a bold, modern castaway style, shoes are removed on arrival as you settle into your laid-back but utterly exquisite surroundings. The central hub of the island feels quite lively and sociable, where families and friends meet for wood fired pizzas and satays for low-key lunches by the pool. By contrast, the far side of the island seems more grown-up, with a beautiful infinity pool, Sunset Point bar and DJ during the day, plus the elegant tapas restaurant. Another plus point is the excellent snorkelling nearby – mantas populate the iridescent water alongside colourful fish and coral gardens.
“Six Senses has captured that special Maldives magic: a polished and smart design paired with an uber laid-back ambience.”
Take advantage of Kanuhura’s extras islands for those desert island experiences. Savour a picnic lunch or sunset champagne set-up on private island, just ten minutes by speedboat from the resort.
One of Vakkaru’s many advantages is that it is a direct seaplane ride from Male, as its position on the western side of the Baa Atoll, away from other resorts means it’s easily accessible yet also feels nicely remote. There’s also little dispute about its location on one of the Maldives’ prettiest islands.
A independent resort, Vakkaru seem to intrinsically understand how to create paradise – for everyone. Its reputation as a honeymooner’s heaven was recently cemented when Vakkaru won ‘best honeymoon destination’ at the World Travel Awards, and yet its kids’ club Parrot Fish is a hugely imaginative space for little ones including its own swimming pool and mini loungers. On top of this, Vakkaru’s service is top-class, highly personalised for each guest and often reaching mind-reading levels, allowing you to completely submit to your sublime surroundings.
“Located on the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of the Baa Atoll, Vakkuru is all your castaway dreams brought to life in breathtaking beauty.”
The house reef is busily populated with tropical fish and an amazing plunging blue hole is easily accessible from shore.
Small but perfectly formed, Kudadoo is a unique offering in that it only has 15 villas that spread out in an arc from an idyllic Maldives island, encircled by white sand. Each over water villa is extremely spacious with a vast pool that overlooks dazzling Indian Ocean views where it is absolutely possible to not see another guest during your stay.
Ideal for privacy lovers and those that cherish their own space, Kudadoo has accomplished the art of personalised service where anything is possible, at any time, in possibly the most luxurious all-inclusive we know of. Menus are a mere suggestion here as you can conjure up whatever you desire, and chefs will whip it up for you. The same goes for spa treatments, watersports, boat trips and scuba diving. Kudadoo exists for you to project your most exotic castaway fantasy onto – and you won’t be disappointed.
“The Maldives’ first fully solar powered resort, Kudadoo shows that luxury and sustainability can be natural bedfellows.”
Although many people find it hard to leave the sumptuousness of their private villa, we recommend taking a sailing trip around the iridescent blues of your ocean surroundings including picnics on deserted islands, spotting dolphins or snorkelling around manta rays.
