Fanjove Private Island

Perfect, icing sugar sand, crystal clear water and miles of virgin coral reef, Fanjove Private Island feels like an undiscovered island hideaway.

A private island is located off the coast of Tanzania is seemingly a million miles from anywhere. Beach-chic at its best, Fanjove exudes barefoot luxury and has a real sense of place having restored a 19th century lighthouse (the only indication that life existed on the island before) and has firm commitments to respect and maintain the island’s natural environment.

"Fanjove is wild and untouched with sweeping bays of icing sugar sand and crystal-clear water. At sea, miles of virgin coral reefs have an abundance of marine life including spinner dolphins, green turtles and humpback whales. With just 18 villas occupying their own secluded space, Fanjove is the ultimate castaway fantasy.”

Things to do

As you might imagine, life at Fanjove is quintessential tropical island living, with a luxe twist. Revel in the simple pleasures of walking on the beach, appreciating the heart-breaking beauty of your surroundings or explore the underwater marine world, snorkelling or diving the azure waters teeming with multi-hued fish, turtles, whales and more. For relaxation, the spa delivers, with sea-based thalassotherapy treatments including sea-salt scrubs and for the ultimate treat, head out on a peaceful sunset dhow cruise, hearing the wind billowing in the sails while you sip on ice-cold champagne.

Sleeping

There are 18 perfectly spaced villas from Beach Villas located directly on the sand to Coral Villas with direct sea access via stairs. Designed using local influence and created with coral stone, palm thatches and sustainable teak, the villas blend inside and outside allowing you to feel at one with the exotic landscapes around you. We love Coral Manor, an enormous beachside home with two bedrooms and its own water pavilion and jetty, perfect for a family.

Food & Drink

With a Michelin trained chef at the helm, delicious meals are prepared in a variety of locations – from the seclusion of your villa to the atmospheric remodelled lighthouse as well as on the beach, around a firepit or wherever the competent team can conjure up in line with your whims on any given day. The rate at Fanjove includes all meals and drinks, including premium brands – a rarity these days – which also translates to an even more stress-free stay.

What We Think

Laba Fanjove is great just on its own as a standalone exotic getaway but for the ultimate trip, allow us to put together a journey that includes a safari in Tanzania first, creating a contrasting pairing of wildlife wonders with achingly beautiful tropical bliss on Fanjove Island.

Best For

As the villas as so spaced out, it’s possible to not see anybody during your stay so honeymooners or couples looking for a romantic escape will be in heaven. That said, there are some great options for a larger family, as well as a gorgeous kids club – but do note, they only take a certain number of children at any one time so as to keep the island the peaceful paradise that it is.

The Verdict

“It’s rare to visit a place that surpasses any pictures you’ve seen, but that sums up Fanjove – it’s like tumbling off the edge of the world into a tropical dream.”
