AEOLIAN ISLANDS, ITALY

The journey to the volcanic Aeolian Islands is an adventure in itself. Fly to either Palermo or Catania in Sicily then board a hydrofoil, hydroplane or private helicopter to whizz you over to this collection of ruggedly beautiful islands. Your destination is the isle of Vulcano where Therasia Resort awaits.

Positioned between rocky cliffs and inky-blue sea, its dramatic location is heightened by the encircling Tyrrhenian Sea dotted with islands silhouetted on the horizon. Alongside jaw-dropping panoramic views, families can enjoy spacious suites with terraces, infinity swimming pools and fabulous food including I Tenerumi, a Michelin-starred restaurant serving out-of-this-world vegetarian tasting menus.

“Known for its bubbling mud baths and black sand beaches, the island of Vulcano is home to one of the Aeolian Islands’ most dazzling hotels.”

MUST DO:

There’s plenty for little explorers to discover on the island of Vulcano – trek to a crater, experience a natural mud bath, snorkel the vibrant waters or make sandcastles on a black sand beach. Day trips to nearby islands are easily done – take a ferry to lovely Lipari or visit the smouldering sometimes-lava spewing island of Stromboli on a night-time boat trip for maximum volcanic drama.

SARDINIA, ITALY

The rustic allure of Sardinia is very different from mainland Italy – it’s a place to indulge in a slow pace and enjoy the simple pleasures of the sea, mountains and wholesome, hyper-local food. Stylish 7 Pines Hotel has an enviable location, tucked away in a pine-clad cove in a secluded corner of Costa Esmeralda in Sardinia’s far north.

Facing sublime views of Baja Sardinia and backed by fragrant pine forests, 7 Pines is gloriously at ease with itself, and very welcoming to families who’ll fall in love with the natural setting, easy access to sandy beaches and slick service with a smile. We’d recommend Suite del Principe that has two separate bedrooms with ensuites, a hot tub, rooftop terrace and a reserved cabana on the beach, where a full beach service means you can have your every whim met while your toes stay in the sand.

“With a captivating position beside a trio of sandy bays, 7 Pines is the ultimate family beach holiday with spades of style.”

MUST DO

With gorgeous beaches just steps away, two swimming pools, a kids’ club, padel and tennis courts and alluring beachside dining spots, it’s very easy to sit back and relax at 7 Pines. But don’t miss a boat trip sailing around the exquisite Maddalena Archipelago or visit Porto Cervo to admire the magnificent yachts bobbing in the harbour.

HVAR, CROATIA

Cosmopolitan Hvar has plenty to offer families and especially suits those with older children. The cobbled streets of Hvar Old Town bustle with seafood restaurants and cafes alongside Venetian sights such as the 16th-century cathedral and hilltop castle.

Set in a quiet part of Hvar and shaded by olive groves and aromatic pine trees, Maslina Resort is a stylish retreat just a short stroll from the beach. With the option of multi-room villas or spacious suites that come with infinity pools and Adriatic Sea views, families can spread out while still enjoying the convenience of this upmarket resort. Spend days splashing in the pool, join a cookery class or enjoy private dining in your villa with your own sommelier to guide your viniculture pairings.

“With a chic, minimalist aesthetic, Maslina Resort suits families with older children who’ll enjoy dipping in and out of buzzy Hvar.”

MUST DO

As easy as it is to succumb to total relaxation here, there’s also plenty to sustain activity seekers. E-bike through lavender fields or hike to hidden caves with a guide. Out at sea, adventures await on the azure Adriatic seas including island-hopping on Maslina’s own speedboat.

CORSICA, FRANCE

The island of Corsica is blessed with some of France’s best beaches lapped by aquamarine waters; its inland speckled with remote mountain villages and dense forests alongside a history that spans thousands of years back to Etruscan and Roman rule. We love the elegant shoreside Hotel de la Roya, situated on the very tip of Corsica – Cap Corse, a peninsula surrounded by beaches and criss-crossed by hiking trails that pass through ancient stone villages.

The hotel particularly suits independent families with older children and teens who like the freedom of their own room plus a sandy beach with watersports just a short walk away while parents will enjoy the soothing sea views and plenty of delicious French seafood and wine. The hotel also has e-bikes to whizz into the pretty town of Saint-Florent, its cobbled streets are full of bars and restaurants and there’s a grand Romanesque cathedral and a marina buzzing with superyachts.

“Located one of the island’s loveliest seaside spots, stylish Hotel de la Roya is ideal for families with independent teens who’ll love the sandy beach, exhilarating watersports and e-biking into the nearby town.”

MUST DO

Follow the holidaying French and take a yacht for the day, exploring tiny coves, crystal-clear waters, fortress-topped cliffs, stopping for lingering lunches at restaurants only accessible by boat.
