Instead of a week of mud, dismal weather and leaden skies, why not use half term for a family trip? With Christmas and New Year festivities long gone, this could be just the thing to put smiles on everyone’s faces.
With picture-perfect islands lapped by crystal-clear waters and topped world-class hotels, you can’t go wrong with the Maldives. However, if you’re travelling with your family, there are some resorts we think are more suitable than others – especially as the Maldives is a magnet for loved-up honeymooners!
The answer lives at Soneva Fushi. Its bleached wood décor and all-natural vibe will please mini eco warriors, as will the resort’s strong commitment to sustainability. Some villas come with waterslides and the kids’ club is one of the best in all of the Maldives. Most of all though, Soneva Fushi is a place to succumb to its utterly beautiful natural environment.
If you’re heading somewhere cold, go to a destination that makes the most of winter. Lapland in Finland, for example, is an adventurous choice for families who want to explore this Arctic wilderness, cosy up in front of log fires and whizz across snowy landscapes by husky sled.
Choose to either stay in a spacious cabin in the woods with a hot tub, or sleep in a glass igloo, giving you unparalleled viewing of this magical snow-dusted world. Spend your days ice fishing, cross-country skiing or snowmobiling and in the evening you and your family may be lucky enough to see the ethereal Northern Lights flicker across the night sky.
Sri Lanka is the perfect destination for families, with its welcoming people, warm climate and fascinating culture from rock fortresses, cave temples and sacred mountains. Stay at luxurious Cape Weligama for some of the best service on the island and you’re close to safe, sandy beaches which are also great locations to learn to surf from.
Galle is an easy hour-long tuk-tuk ride away, where you can spend the day discovering the Dutch colonial buildings, Flag Rock where locals perform madcap jumps into the sea, and shop for gems and artisan gifts in the tangle of narrow streets. Take a boat trip out to sea, where you may spot whales and dolphins thrashing around the Indian Ocean.
For a dose of warmth, blue-skies and Vitamin D-inducing sunshine, Oman is a good bet for February half term. If you’d like to experience both the craggy mountains and the Arabian Sea on one trip, you could spend time at both Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort and Anantara Salalah. The former is a mountaintop retreat full of authentic experiences including walks through ancient villages and pomegranate orchards. It also has sensational views, plus spacious suites that have private pools.
By contrast, Salalah has a coastal but no less luxurious location. Here’s the place for beachside relaxation on its occasional camel-dotted sands or by the 44-metre infinity pool. Children love the kids’ club where they can try cooking, water play or even fishing. For something different, let the hotel organise a night camping under the stars in the desert.
