Dominican Republic

A Caribbean Secret

Experience a hidden side to this popular Caribbean island on the wild and remote northern shore where luxe hotels are found between the rainforest and deserted beaches.

Few know about the Caribbean island of the Dominican Republic’s sparsely populated and wildly remote north shore, often referred to as the Amber Riviera for the tiny gemstones that give the beaches a golden glow. Stay in style and enjoy all-natural experiences in pristine jungle and the Atlantic Ocean. With comfortably warm temperatures year-round, a trip to the Dominican Republic can be easily combined with a US hub like Miami – extend your holiday with a few nights in America’s Art Deco capital on your way home.

“The northern part of the island is one of the Caribbean’s best kept secrets, discover this tropical paradise while staying in luxe seclusion.”

Dominican Republic’s Northern Shore

"Where verdant rainforest meets wild and remote beaches is the location of two luxe hotels offering superlative experiences in this natural enclave."

Away from major tourist spots, the Dominican Republic’s north coastline is in a world of its own. Where the jungle meets the ocean, this pristine landscape is home to a few secluded hotels. Full of biodiversity, the jungle is ripe for exploration flitting with over 160 different species of bird. Deeper into the forest brings you to thundering waterfalls, small communities and plenty of adventure from kayaking through mangroves, mountain climbing and canyoning.

The Atlantic Ocean also awaits for thrills – this part of the island is one of the world’s best kite-surfing destinations and you can also fish for big game, spot humpback whales or take a paddleboard tour along the coastline.

Like many Aman hotels, Amanera is characterised by eye-catching modern design and the clean lines of contemporary architecture. Located above Playa Grande – one of the Dominican Republic’s best beaches – Amanera is made up of 25 style-laden casitas that overlook this remote stretch of coastline.

Welcoming both families and couples, days at Amanera have a tranquil pace starting with a tropical breakfast at clifftop Casa Grande which has sensational views of the Atlantic. Perhaps amble down to the beach for sunbathing to the sound of the waves before lunch of ceviche and ice-cold rosé at the Beach Club. The jungle-clad spa awaits for afternoon rejuvenation with a nourishing ritual created from ingredients sourced from the Caribbean. Close out the day with a chef-prepared barbecue served to your private al fresco dining room.

Miami Beach

Finish in Miami

On your way home, consider extending the trip in perpetually sunny Miami. Depending on how long you want to stay, there are a variety of ways to enjoy this Art Deco-infused city. Keeping local, you’ll be naturally drawn to the beach, where colourful lifeguard stations dot the sandy shore and the clear waters of Atlantic shimmer invitingly. Culture is abound with several notable art fairs here every year you could use your trip to purchase artwork or simply wander the Art Deco architecture of Ocean Drive and adjacent Collins Avenue or visit the Wolfsonian-FIU design museum home to American decorative and fine arts. Further afield you could take an airboat tour of the Everglades National Park then head south to the Florida Keys – home to exceptional beaches, marine national parks and a variety of water sports.

We’d recommend staying at the centrally located hotel The Setai Miami Beach on Collins Avenue. With ocean-view suites, a rooftop pool and an Asian restaurant, you’ll be in very good hands.
