Caribbean Spa Calm
Caribbean spas worth making a detour for
Wellness is becoming a much-needed part of our holidays so it’s important to know where you’re going has a top-notch spa. We’ve picked out six of our favourite Caribbean spas where rejuvenation is guaranteed.
Whether you want to succumb to total relaxation or are looking for the new you, you’ll find phenomenal facilities, ancient practices and top-to-toe replenishment all in the most stunning of Caribbean settings.
PRIVATE ISLAND BLISS
Como Parrot Cay, Turks & Caicos
A private island framed by the silkiest sand imaginable, Como Parrot Cay has a low-key but seriously luxe vibe, ideal for those seeking a paradise castaway experience. With a less-is-more approach, it’s easy to fall in love with the all-natural Caribbean seascapes and the pared-back villas at Parrot Cay, cradled in the lushly vegetated dunes which lead directly onto the bone-white beach.
What sets Como Parrot Cay apart from other paradise islands is its high-quality spa. The Como Shambhala spa is a den of utter calm and wellbeing, with spa pavilions, yoga pavilions, jacuzzi and Japanese onsen baths spread around the lush gardens overlooking the azure blue north Caicos Channel. Asian-inspired treatments include Ayurveda, aromatherapy and other hand-on holistic treatments for balanced rejuvenation.
“If privacy is your thing, choose the larger, hidden away beach residences with heated pools. There’s a reason so many celebrities come here to holiday, especially with a cosseting round-the-clock team of staff to look after your every whim”
The Como Shambhala Bath Treatment could well be the most relaxing experience ever. Be buffed and scrubbed with natural nut oils, salt and sugar and slathered with shea butter before a long soak in the bath followed by a deep, slow massage.
AMANYARA - TURKS & CAICOS
This is the place to come for peace and quiet. If you long to escape the cacophony of everyday life, Amanyara, set within 18,00 acres of forest bordered by the North Atlantic Ocean, is tranquillity personified. Overlooking a collection of still, reflective ponds and surrounded by lush vegetation, the spa’s natural environment has a calming and health-boosting effect. Here you can immerse yourself in one, two or three-day programmes where you choose the focus whether that’s detox, mindfulness or weight management.
Your program will be individually tailored to you, and as with all Aman spas, there’s a soothing, holistic slant which promises an overwhelming sense of calm. Your day might start with yoga or meditation, before concentrating on pranayama for breathing and oxygen flow, before a Tibetan purifying bath. The range of treatments are truly amazing and Aman’s speciality lies in finding the right one for you.
“Enjoy Amanyara’s gorgeous natural surroundings. Kayak to the reef and snorkel the underwater world or hike trails through the forests and rocky shoreline. At night, gaze at the star-strewn night sky”
For especially exhausted souls, we recommend the Nourishing Massage Ritual, which has a hugely restorative effect on energy levels. Using chakras and sound healing you’ll feel balanced and completely restored.
Chable Maroma, Mexico
Chablé Maroma is a striking resort, set on a lesser explored blindingly white Mayan Riviera beach. Thatched casitas are dotted amid jungle, each with a turquoise-tiled private pool, and nearby oversized daybeds invite afternoon siestas. On the beach, cerulean waters meet powder-soft sand and plates of ceviche matched with zesty margaritas give you a taste of Mexico.
Step into the spa and you’ll feel the atmospheric presence of Mayan culture. Enter past the sacred ceiba trees and delve into a world of ancient rituals. This is the place to bring a spa-loving partner to begin a wellness journey together. Detox in a pre-Hispanic temazcal (sauna), have a healing ceremony with a shaman and enjoy a Mayan-style massage with herb compresses. Afterwards, the aquamarine Caribbean Sea beckons – relax and re-tox on the beach with a mezcal cocktail.
“As tempting as it is to succumb to your relaxing surroundings, dose up on Mexico’s natural beauty and culture. Dive into mysterious, turquoise blue cenote pool-caves, explore Mayan ruins, wander in the sultry jungle or snorkel the world’s second largest reef”
Using the tree as a symbol of connection, Chable’s signature Forest Awakening ritual aims to calm the nervous system and invigorate the spirit using essential oils from balsam, fir, juniper and cypress trees to relax and cleanse via massage, chakra anointment and ceremonial purification.
PARK HYATT - ST KITTS & NEVIS
Take yourself away from your day-to-day life and plant yourself on a gorgeous Caribbean island, surrounded by turquoise sea and dotted with swaying palm trees and you will already start to feel better. But take things one step further at Park Hyatt’s Sugar Mill Spa & Sanctuary and you could come home transformed.
The spa promises to help you awaken your best self, taking you on a wellness journey to help balance the ‘four pillars’ – Challenge, Improve, Renew and Indulge. This could mean a sunrise meditation, mindfulness breathing techniques, or a weightless water experience alongside more traditional massages, scrubs and facials until stress has completely melted away. Top it up with daily yoga and you will positively float home.
“Serenity continues in the suites with sea-views, pale polished wood, rain showers and deep tubs for soaking”
We found the Delicate Rose After Sun Facial to be absolutely heavenly. Marshmallow, tamanu and yarrow replenish and soothe sun-damaged skin and the scent of rose is calming and refreshing.
HAVE IT ALL
SANDY LANE - BARBADOS
Sandy Lane has been an all-out favourite of ours for some time and their reliably brilliant spa packages really hit the mark for those looking for a wellness overhaul. The spa is absolutely huge, and at 47,000 square feet is one of the largest in the Caribbean. On arrival, the grand marble reception and sweeping staircase set the tone for tranquillity and upstairs, eleven treatment rooms await which come with their own hydrotherapy pools and gardens.
There is a huge range of treatments here from cryotherapy, reiki to rhassoul mud experiences and whatever you choose, you know you will be in excellent hands. Remember to arrive early to make use of the heat experiences and spa garden and afterwards drift back to the beach for a cocktail or an ice cream. Here, anything is possible.
“The spa at Sandy Lane takes influence from across the globe, reaching to the Far East and India, all wrapped up in Barbadian warmth”
For silky soft skin, try the Bajan Sugar Cane Wrap, a signature treatment using locally produced raw brown sugar and warm essential oils to exfoliate the skin.
Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort - St LUCIA
Located between the iconic pitons of Saint Lucia and backed by lush jungle, Sugar Beach is a real looker. When you’ve dragged yourself away from the glorious views head to the all-natural Rainforest Spa, where treatment rooms are straw-topped cabanas and local St Lucian culture is blended in to the spa rituals using bamboo, coconut milk, volcanic stone and seaweed.
For something immersive take a spa safari with Sugar Beach, where you hike to the island’s volcano. On arrival, bathe in its warm, medicinal waters before being slathered in volcanic mud. Once it’s dry, rinse off under a nearby waterfall. Finish off back at the spa with a hot stone massage and feel invigorated by the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation.
“The spa makes use of the island’s bountiful natural produce. Bamboo makes a delicate body exfoliant, and a Bean to Bar experience will show you how chocolate is made.”
Let your skin shine through with a Caribbean Glow Relax treatment where sea salt and coconut polishes the skin and revives blood circulation leaving you soft as butter.
