DAY 1-4: SILKY WATERWAYS

Your hop on a light aircraft flight from Maun into the heart of the Okavango Delta gives you an introduction to what this World Heritage Site has to offer, as you fly over the silky waterways below. In this wetland paradise, the lily-scattered floodplains and are home to some of the world’s best game viewing.

Flood levels fluctuate dramatically throughout the year, with high water levels peaking in the central Okavango during the dry winter months and water levels at their lowest during the later summer months, contrary to the seasonal rainfall.

The Delta is home to huge numbers of plains game plus unusual antelope such as red lechwe, puku and sitatunga. Its a world-famous stronghold for predators as well as many sought-after bird species like Pel’s fishing owl, kingfishers and bee-eaters.

Sandibe lodge, Okavango, Botswana

Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge

Far from your traditional safari camp, Sandibe is the perfect Delta retreat. Its enormous organic timber structure comprises of 12 cocoon-like suites, each with private pool, designed to mimic a weaver bird’s nest. They peep out of the forest canopy, like the overlapping scales of a pangolin, and are cleverly elevated off the ground to give you wonderfully undisturbed views of the Okavango Delta. There’s plenty of extraordinary wildlife around the camp and game drives and guided walking safaris are executed with precision.

DAY 5-9: DEEP INTO THE DESERT

It’s then time to leave watery landscapes behind, flying across dramatic terrain to the vast salt pans and grass plains of the Makgadikgadi, which forms part of the central Kalahari.

Your visit here proves there’s more to Botswana than game viewing as you venture out on foot and by vehicle to see desert-adapted wildlife as well as spend time with local Bushmen – hunter-gatherers who originate from the area and whose fascinating culture and way of life has remained intact.

The pans, huge, flat expanses of hot, sun-blasted terrain were once part of a great super lake that covered much of northern Botswana. It is a unique wilderness where you can expect the unexpected.

Jacks Camp, Botswana

Jack's Camp

Like an oasis in the middle of the desert, Jack's Camp was set by the legendary explorer Jack Bousfield. Chic and romantic, its positioning among desert palms on the edge of the Makgadikgadi National Park is spellbinding. There are ten marque style tents each ‘Out of Africa’ styled in plush textiles featuring their own pool. Activities at the camp focus on the unusual aspects of the area and include quad biking, sleep outs, horse riding, palaeontology, Bushman interaction, meerkats and day and night vehicle safaris with the opportunity to spot species unique to the area such as aardvark and gemsbuck.

Summary

The best of the Delta combined with the beauty of the Kalahari desert – this is a short and sweet itinerary packed with amazing and diverse experiences – a must for those short on time but looking for the best of Botswana.
