Argos in Cappadocia

Turkey

Sarah recently returned from a stay at Argos in Cappadocia, a luxury cave hotel unlike any other.

Set amid an extraordinary landscape full of geological wonder, Argos in Cappadocia is cleverly fused into the existing age-old houses that are hewn within sculpted caves, connected by a warren of underground tunnels. From rooms carved into ancient caves to panoramic terraces overlooking fairy chimneys and hot air balloons at sunrise, Argos offers a magical escape rooted in history, style, and atmosphere.

The Cappadocia region far surpassed my expectations - the mesmerizing landscapes, hiking around stunning scenery and the chance to experience a hot air balloon ride while enjoying the luxury of Argos all made for a truly memorable experience.

WHEN TO GO:

December to January is considered too cold, but my visit in the winter month of March for snow-capped landscapes and cosy suppers around the firepit added another dimension for me.

WHO FOR:

Active couples looking for something different will love energetic hikes and thrilling hot air balloons and will get the most out of this rugged landscape.

WHY WE LIKE IT:

The atmospheric views from every corner, cultural experiences, sensational dining and top service make the hotel stand out – a perfect choice for special occasions.

THINGS TO DO

The quintessential activity at Cappadocia is a hot air balloon ride at dawn, rising above the ethereal fairy chimneys, silently drifting over the lunar-like landscapes giving you a unique bird’s eye view as the sun brings light to the rocky scenery. The rest of the day can be spent at leisure at Argos in Cappadocia – depending on the season you might be languidly lying by the pool or cosying up by the fire with a glass of red wine. Argos’ spa promises soothing relaxation with its collection of treatments that use the healing power of local herbs or you can take a dip in the cavernous inside pool. Hiking in Rose Valley is highly recommended to get up close to the geological landscapes – there are numerous hikes and trails throughout the region which can be enjoyed without a guide.

SLEEP

All the rooms at Argos in Cappadocia enjoy mesmerising views over Pigeon Valley and are furnished in a minimalist style with a hushed colour palette, set within the existing volcanic rock. I would recommend one of the suites in the cave, which has an open fireplace carved into the rock, and an indulgent indoor pool. There is also a two-bedroom suite suitable for a family.

DRINK & DINE

Argos in Cappadocia has two restaurants;  we recommend Nahita which features local Anatolian cuisine, with a sustainable menu delivering mouthwatering specialities such as avocado tartare, artichoke fondue and 26-hour cooked lamb.  Cappadocia is also known for its vineyards and Argos’ own vines span 21 hectares on the slopes of Kızılırmak – speak to your sommelier to try local vintages.

OUR TOP TIP

Look out for intriguing corners of the hotel – a visit through the old stone tunnels to the hotel’s wine cellar stocked with over 2,000 bottles is quite the adventure. Also to be noted – this ‘cave’ hotel is very much a high-end experience, that in no way compromises on luxury – instead the rock-sculpted spaces make a highly atmospheric and sumptuous place to stay.

BEST FOR

Anybody looking to celebrate a special occasion will find the backdrop of Cappadocia to be an alluring and utterly memorable event therefore honeymooners, anniversary trips and couples’ getaways would be highly suited. A certain level of fitness is required to navigate the rocky terrain on hikes into Rose Valley.

The Verdict

A hot-air balloon ride above the lunar landscape, floating on a snowy cold day was an absolute highlight and an experience that will always stay with me. If you’d like to speak to me about your own Cappadocia visit or Turkish itinerary, I’d be delighted to help you.
