Scenic train to tea country

Sri Lanka

All aboard! Wind your way past lush tea plantations, majestic peaks and dramatic waterfalls as you take a ride on one of Asia’s most picturesque rail routes. Sit back enjoy the views, as you travel alongside scenery dotted with tea pickers dressed in colourful saris.

Set off from Kandy station for the journey deep into high-altitude tea country. Aboard a colonial-era train, you’ll rattle your way to a height of around 2,000 metres while snaking past dense jungle, terraced rice fields and carpeted tea plantations.

The journey is a wonderful way to witness the dramatic landscape of the highlands and to meet the locals who will be travelling on board. Once known as the Ceylon Government Railway and a product of British Rule, Sri Lanka’s railway system dates to the mid-19th century. It’s a step back to yesteryear, although don’t expect white gloves and silver service – this is an everyday experience for Sri Lankans from all walks of life.

After around a three-hour journey, the train hauls its way into Hatton station where you are met by your driver and luggage to continue your onward travel.
