Sail Away in Antigua

Antigua & Barbuda

With a rich maritime history and 365 beaches to explore, it’s hardly surprising that sailing is a way of life in Antigua. Visit during the island’s annual regatta and you’ll see an armada of beautiful racing yachts setting sail from English Harbour. But nothing compares to taking to the seas yourself, on a private charter around the island’s sublime shores.

Feel the warm trade winds in your hair as you soak up the sun on a private day charter from Carlisle Bay to Great Bird Island. You’ll spend the morning cruising the turquoise waters and snorkelling above vivid coral reefs. Then drop anchor to enjoy a delicious lunch hamper on the white sands of this deserted island. If you’re a keen snorkeller, day trips to Green Island and Cades Reef are just as rewarding.

The week-long sailing regatta begins on the last Sunday in April each year. It’s one of the biggest events in the World Sailing calendar, with world-class sailing and fantastic parties throughout the island. The Inn at English Harbour offers some of the best views. You’ll need to plan ahead if you want to get a taste of the action, as the island does book up rapidly.

There are plenty of boat hire options depending on how experienced you are, from fully staffed yacht charters to bareboat rentals for seasoned sailors. If you’re looking for romance, try a private sunset cruise. Watching the horizon turn a fiery red from deck with a glass of chilled champagne in hand certainly takes some beating.
