Colombo heritage walk

Sri Lanka

Discover Colombo’s hidden treasures on a walk through the city’s historic Fort area. Meet your guide at the old Dutch Hospital, a beautifully restored colonial building which is now one of the city’s premier shopping and dining precincts. After a brief introduction to the area’s long and colourful history, follow your expert guide on a stroll through the legends and landmarks of the atmospheric streets.

During the walk, you’ll stop at Asia’s oldest clock-tower, see the original colonial era emblem of the HSBC and pass the historic Cargills department store. Your guide will show you old images of the streets where you are standing on his iPad, which really draws you into the whole experience. Once you’ve explored the Fort, you’ll stop for tea overlooking the harbour within the faded grandeur of the Grand Oriental Hotel.

For the second part of the walk, you’ll explore the city’s bustling Pettah market. Begin with a visit to the Dutch Museum, another 17th century colonial gem and the former residence of the Dutch governor. Then wander the teeming streets of Sri Lanka’s largest bazaar, where the scent of spice hangs heavy in the air. Sample fiery street food and mingle with the locals.
