Head to San Francisco’s Pier 33 at dusk, then board your ferry for a night-time tour of notorious Alcatraz Island. As you approach ‘The Rock’, your guide will point out hidden spots used for attempted escapes, against the silhouette of the Golden Gate Bridge.
After docking on the island, you will be led uphill to the imposing cellhouse of what was once the USA’s highest security prison. Wander the cellhouse at your own pace, accompanied by the island’s award-wining audio guide presentation. Hear tales of life inside from former prisoners. Learn about 1946’s ‘Battle of Alcatraz’ from guards who lived and worked on the island. Then experience the eerie atmosphere within the dark solitary confinement cells.
Visiting Alcatraz by night provides a very different view of the island and what it meant to the men who lived there. Numbers are strictly limited for evening visits, so you’ll be sharing the island with far fewer guests than on a daytime tour.
