The gateway to sub-Saharan Africa, the landscapes of the northern provinces bordering Botswana range from sub-tropical and semi-desert to savannah and bushveld. Distinctive baobab trees, some of which are thought to be more than 3,000 years old, are an iconic feature of the region, as are the many historic sites that include relics of the Stone Age San people.
