High in the heart of central Africa, Rwanda’s magical Parc National des Volcans lies on the slopes of the Virunga volcanic mountain range, protecting rare mountain gorillas and a rich mosaic of ecosystems ranging from evergreen and bamboo forest to grassland, swamp and heath. Approached via cultivated foothills, the rainforest of the park is home to four habituated gorilla families, as well as the rare golden monkey, a host of colourful and vocal birds and elusive populations of buffalo and elephant. Tracking gorillas here in their natural habitat is an unforgettable experience, whilst other activities include climbing the peaks themselves and visiting the grave of great primatologist Dian Fossey.
