Namibia Namib Region

Namib means "vast", and is no understatement for the Namib-Naukluft Park. The largest game park in Africa, its extremes range from the freshwater lagoon of Sandwich Harbour, a paradise for ornithologists, to the parched Sossusvlei in the heart of the Namib Desert. Here, the burnt umber dunes are the highest in the world, wind sculpted into razor-sharp peaks whilst in the north of the park stony plains and lunar landscapes lead to the massive purple ranges of the Naukluft Mountains. Established originally to protect the Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, this area is superb hiking country and, as in the rest of the park, is home to a surprising array of animals, plants and insects adapted for life in an apparently inhospitable region.
