A much acclaimed desert retreat, Little Kulala lies in the heart of the Namib Desert in a private reserve bordering the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Overlooking the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei and rugged mountains rising abruptly from the plains, this luxurious lodge is as brilliantly designed for its location as are the flora and fauna that live in such inhospitable conditions. Eleven stylish air conditioned chalets on raised platforms vaunt glass walls, Armani-esque neutral decor and exquisite fittings, while airy bedrooms, sitting areas and bathrooms with outdoor showers open onto bleached decks with plunge pools and shaded salas. The unobstructed desert views are sublime, while rooftop terraces are designed for sleeping under the blazing constellations. Expeditions to the dunes, mountains and desert include early morning nature drives, guided walks and spotlit night drives. Dawn ballooning followed by a Champagne breakfast is unmissable and although wildlife may not be as abundant as elsewhere, many a hardened safari hand has been reduced to awestruck wonder at the sight of poised oryx silhouetted against the burnt umber of the desert.
