Kwandwe is a vast, malaria-free Big Five private game reserve located in the Eastern Cape. A member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux group and described by Fodor's as 'one of the least discovered, culturally rich and unspoilt wilderness areas in South Africa', it offers guests the Big Five and a choice of four excellent lodges.
Overlooking the Great Fish River, the Great Fish River Lodge comprises nine lavish suites, each with a private observation deck, plunge pool and a distinctive décor that mixes African artefacts, Persian rugs, rough hewn yellowwood and antique furniture.
Further into the reserve, and ideal for friends and families, Uplands Homestead is a three bedroom farmhouse with a swimming pool that is available on an exclusive basis, whilst the funky and vibrant six suite Ecca Lodge offers an upbeat family safari with modern cuisine to satisfy sophisticated palates.
The newest addition, Melton Manor, is a warm, contemporary Frontier farmhouse with four ensuite bedrooms that is also reserved for exclusive use. Alongside the Big Five, Kwandwe is home to cheetah, kudu, hippo and many other species.
As well as game drives, guests can take bush walks along the river, marvel at the unusual birdlife and reflect on the region's rich social, cultural, military and archaeological past. Kwandwe's Carnivore Research specialist safari introduces guests to the fascinating carnivore research ongoing at Kwandwe.
