The birthplace of walking safaris, South Luangwa National Park hosts some of Africa’s densest wildlife populations. The Luangwa River attracts 60 animal and more than 400 bird species to a landscape that changes dramatically with the seasons. The hippo population is huge, while elephant, antelope and primates are easily spotted. Predators are, not surprisingly, in good supply, and range from lion and leopard to an extraordinarily high concentration of crocodiles. For those after a glimpse of the legacy of colonial Africa, the Harvey family’s Shiwa Ngandu estate offers every safari activity imaginable as well as fishing trips, horse riding, visits to hot springs and waterfalls and an Edwardian-style manor house.
