Stepping back in time to witness a way of life preserved for thousands of years is the reason many come to trek among the rich mountain scenery of the hill tribe villages near Chaing Mai and Chaing Rai. The modernised city of Chaing Mai with over 300 temples and its old quarter has retained many of its traditional features including wooden houses, markets, handicrafts and the opportunity to experience traditional t’ai chi, massage and yoga. Chaing Rai, with its beautiful hills overlooking the Kok River, is also home to a representation of the Buddhist layout of the universe. However, it is the hill tribes in their exquisitely crafted costumes which make this region so fascinating.
