The magnificent shrine with its lavish gold roof and exuberant statues protects this ancient relic which is paraded through the streets each summer with drummers, dancers and elephants during the pageant of Esala Perahera. Encapsulated in the middle of the island is The Cultural Triangle where three ancient cities including Kandy bring together much of the island’s history. Anuradhapura is a holy city to Buddhists and Polonnaruwa has a former palace and magnificent carved Buddha’s. Sigiriya, a rock fortress and former royal citadel, has beautifully restored water gardens while the caves of Dambulla are famous for rock carvings of more than 150 statues of Gods.
