Established in 1535 by the conquistador Francisco Pizzaro and known as the City of Kings in acknowledgement of its foundation on Epiphany, the capital of Peru became the richest and most elegant city on the continent during colonial times. Although rather daunting at first sight, much of the city’s former beauty has been restored and historical treasures are now housed in several excellent museums such as the Gold Museum and the eerie Museum of the Inquisition. In keeping with its status as a boisterous South American capital, it buzzes with vitality and vaunts the best food, drink and nightlife in the country. Enjoy fine dining overlooking ancient ruins or the Pacific Ocean.
