The perfection of Kenya’s coast is almost a cliché. Porcelain white beaches are lapped by warm, aquamarine waters in, on or under which every water sport imaginable is available. Deep-sea and big game fishing in superbly equipped boats is easily arranged whilst diving is exceptional; coral reefs host jewel coloured fish of all sizes whilst benign whale sharks, the largest fish in the world, are regularly sighted on the outer reefs. Shore-based attractions include the intriguing tenth century Swahili town of Lamu, whose winding streets and ornately carved doorways resonate with ancient secrets, the dhow docks of Mombasa and in the north, the spectacular Tana Delta that brims with bird and wildlife.
