The Malagasy people of today are a mélange of Africa and Asia; original migrants are thought to have arrived from Indonesia about 2000 years ago, with subsequent migrations from Africa. This resulted in a culturally similar but ethnically diverse population, with the Merina of the central highlands looking very Asian, yet the people of the coast are largely African in appearance. This population has also been added to by people of Indian and Arab origin who came on the great Swahili trade routes, as well as more recent Chinese and European migrants. With some 18 different tribes on the island its people are as fascinating as its wildlife, and are amongst the friendliest and respectful to be found anywhere.
